Hello there, I have a Gateway DX4840-15c system bought from FutureShop in late 2010. It is kind of outdated in terms of specs, but it's still mostly suitable for my needs. Anyways, I was wondering what was the maximum memory allowed on this system? Currently I have 6gb ddr3 (I have 4 slots) (I have no idea how it is broken up) but I want to increase it a little because new games require larger memory. Can anyone plz inform me what is the maximum memory I can put in here and what is the best memory I can put in there for games.
I have upgraded my pc with a 500W psu and a r7 265 video card.

For what? I don't think I have seen a game that required 8gb of ram ...

Many computers are sold with much more memory than needed. Nand flash is relatively cheap, and lots of PC buyers think they are getting something special when they see a PC with an absurdly high amount of ram (even when it is still equipped with a mediocre processor).

That said, the video card did probably up your memory usage a little.

A quick google shows that this model should have come with 4 sticks of 2gb each. If so, a fourth stick of 2gb couldnt hurt. Memory should be upgraded evenly anyhow.

That said, 6gb is most likely NOT slowing you down. 6gb is more than enough to run most scenarios. Newer memory will not create a noticeable impact on gaming like the video card did.

Why do you think you need more memory? Could you provide a little bit more detail on what where you want better performance? Is it framerates, game load times, etc?

Yes you are correct. The video card changed thing up in terms of games. My desktop is only for games and surfing the net. I just want more ram cuz its a requirement. Thats all, i dont know if it will benifit me, its not like my 6 gb gives me any trouble. Most pc come with much memory so I thought i wud hav it too since it migth give better game performance
