So my case is an arc midi r2, have all fan slots taken up by extra fans from fractal design and its a really quiet machine when its idle >_>

The only time it gets noisy is when gaming, and the gpu fans are the culprit

thats the gpu i got for $500 shipped, which was a great deal i reckon so i jumped on it. I'm quiet happy with it really, performance is nuts compared to my old 6970, but like isaid it gets noisy rather quickly. The fan setting is on auto and while playing games it likes to keep itself in the 60-68C range, i'm also playing @ 120hz which further adds to some heat. Basically what im wanting to know is if i manually set the fan to a level where it wasn't as noisy but still higher than idle and let the gpu most likely slip into the 70s, and maybe approach 80C, will that be fine? I'd probably guess yes if the reference cards hit 95C and it was safe and normal for them. Thanks.

Solution
There really wouldn't be a problem letting the card get a bit hotter than normal, I've seen reports of 290X's around 90C+ under full strenuous load. AMD designed them that way, if they couldn't take the heat, they wouldn't get that hot. But buying a graphics card with 3 fans and with the 290X being notorious for noise, you probably should've expected this.

I'd have to disagree, its large for a mid tower, and i removed all the front cages so air will flow even easier throughout the case, plus theres a bottom mounted fan blowing air from the cold floor directly into the gpu fans. I initially had a H440 but quickly switched after feeling that the front and top closure were just choking the fans in favor of a more sleek design.

Seems like a comparison to other 290Xs, I was referring to graphics cards as a whole, I think NVIDIA has really pulled ahead in the noise-to-cooling ratio over AMD. Then again, I don't care about noise, so I'd prefer the raw power over anything else.

I don't think the actual GPU has as much to do with the noise as the actual fans, but its still quieter than my old reference 6970 so at least thats a plus. A buddy of mine actually has gtx 780 gigabyte with the 3 fans, i'd interested to go see how loud his sounds. Thanks further supporting the 90C+ claim. I'm gonna set it to around 40% and let that run at all times.

This is true, i too crave for raw performance, and really if im playing something with headphones on i dont hear the fans going, and if i can use speakers and put em up a bit its the same deal where the game noise just overpowers the pc noise
