I recently upgraded my CPU and GPU from an AMD Phenom x4 965 to and AMD FX-8320 and Sapphire HD 6870 to Asus GTX 660, respectively. While playing more recent games (Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4) I get massive fps drops for about 5-10 seconds and then back to normal. I monitored the temps on both CPU and GPU and my CPU never got above 50 degrees celcius and my GPU stayed around 60 degrees celcius. During the FPS drops, the GPU goes from using 98% down all the way to 2% and back up again. The CPU spikes to full load as well during this time while previously using 60% of its resources. The drops usually occur in more fast-paced situations (driving and massive firefights) and putting the settings all the way down to low does not fix the issue. I have re-installed drivers multiple times and this doesn't fix the problem. My thinking is my motherboard (Asrock 880GM-LE FX) is the reason, but I just want a second opinion. I did not change motherboards when changing CPUs.

Full Specs:
CPU: AMD FX-8320
GPU: Asus GTX 660
Mobo: Asrock 880GM-LE FX
HDD: Seagate 500 gb Barracuda & WD Black 1 tb
PSU: 750 Watt Diablotek gold plus certified (non-modular)
Heat Sink: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Case: NZXT Phantom 410
4 case fans

Solution
your mobo isnt that good for running such cpu. since it lacks vrm cooling and having a tower cooler the vrm area must be getting very hot leading to voltage drops, even your cpu is stays rather cool.also if your mobo has only 4pin power connector for the cpu i strongly recommend for a mobo upgrade to at least a 970 chipset with 8+2 heatshinked power phase vrm. finally your diablotek isnt to be trusted. i would upgrade to a quality unit.

How much RAM installed on your PC also that fps drop can occur if you play game at ultra graphics settings on a GTX660 2GB. If U have 8GB RAM or more your system can handle the game fine upto medium settings smoothly.

haha. derp. I have 8 gb of RAM and I run the game on medium even though the nvidia driver recommends high.

Both games are played on medium settings. They are both handled well at high settings though, minus the fps drop. BF4 runs at a constant 70 fps on high then dips to 10 then back. Watch Dogs stays at 40 and goes all the way into single digits and back. On medium, BF4 is 100 fps and Watch Dogs is 50.

That's probably a good idea but I'm curious if that would fix the fps issue. My guess is yes but I can only assume.

this massive cpu-gpu drops are hardware related.but dont expect perfect performance running watchdogs. it is a rather new game and everybody is waiting for optimizations!

Haha I've heard of Watch Dogs running bad. Leave it to Ubisoft to let that happen. Thanks all for the help!
