Hello all,

Just upgraded from a ASUS GTX 750ti to a MSI GTX 770. Contrary to what the guys at frys told me my AMD FX 4170 is not enough computing power for this card. I found this out the hard way when I got EXACTLY the same FPS and performance after I installed it and bench marked it against my old 750 (3dMark11).... So now I need a new CPU. This is a drag because I also had to get a new PSU (520 antec to 750 Corsair) which wasnt in the budget.

So what is the best budget CPU that will fully utilize my 770? I have a AM3+ mainbord. I really hope i can find something for around $100ish. Ill do up to $150 if I have to... anything over that I will have to wait. I was considering the FX-6300. The FX-8320 was recommended to me but I dont want to spend that much if I dont have to.

overclocked fx 8320 would be better for gtx 770 if you want to use its full potential ...
but even fx6300 is much better than your old cpu ...

It depends on what you are playing.. for exaple in WatchDogs fx8320 gives you a lot more fps.. some new games can use 8-core cpu.

..if you have some extra money i thing that 8320 is much better for future..

so not a good news ...
get the amd 6300 with decent heatsink ...
cheap MSI motherboards (including yours)
have low quality VRM for overclocking indeed ...

Your mb can run well with non-oc cpu.. it supports both 6300 and 8320. :)
edit.. if you will have some problem you can buy new mobo too.. its quite cheap.

it will handle fx6300 , you can even OC it a bit
(but don´t increase the voltage much , or not at all in best case scenario) ...

6300 is a safer choice because it's 95W. Look what MSI tells:

wow... a possible diffrence of 43w in its tdp... yeah, thank you 125w is close enough as it is, that could have easily fried my mainboard.

IMO, wait and get an intel setup. You're dumping money into a pit if you start looking at 'ok' CPU's for a pretty bad motherboard. It would be wiser to wait and invest in something solid.

Having said that, what would be your budget for a CPU and motherboard? I'm guessing it was around $180?

I'd take this:

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qtLfhM
Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qtLfhM/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor ($114.49 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($86.66 @ Newegg)
Total: $201.15
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

It'll perform similarly to an FX 6300 or 8320 in most titles, often better and sometimes worse. However, the major difference is that it gives you a solid upgrade path onto an i5 or i7 which FX's generally can't match. Moreover since it's a 97 series motherboard it will support Broadwell upon release.
