Creating backup HDDs

I am going off to uni in a few months and am going to buy 2 new hard drives for my work. My plan was to do all my work on one hard drive and back it up to the second one.

My question is: Is this possible? and how would I go about doing it?

If they are internal drives, using the BIOS, set up RAID 1 between the two drives, It effectively makes a duplicate of any information on one drive onto the other. If you are using external drives there should be a backup option either on your antivirus or through the Windows control panel "if you use Windows" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels

Thankyou. I read about raid 1, is it as simple as just turning it on in the bios? I read somewhere that I need to restore my pc and do it during set up

It depends, do you have a custom build, a laptop, what OS do you have? Regardless Its a very good idea to backup onto an external HDD if you have one.

I have a custom build Windows 8.1 desktop. I do have an external HDD I was just wondering if I could RAID because it is automatic rather than having to copy all the files over.

I am not familiar with Windows 8.1 but it looks like this ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT_0lNZ57k8 ) video looks like it may do it for you, As far as I can tell yes it it possible but I'm having difficulty finding any better sources.
