Right! So I got everything put together and when I started it up I got nothing on the display. the fans were running and all. Then I came here and found this: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems
I went through it and tried each step that applied to me (I don't have a video card for example). I took the motherboard out and have it sitting on my table just in case it was being shorted by the case.

I'm at my wits end. When my friend recommended I just build it because it would be cheaper, he failed to mention that you have to be an engineer to do it. :(

I'm not sure what to do now. I feel like taking the thing and throwing it in the trash, but it costs too much money.

edit: forgot to say that at the moment, while it is out of the case, I only have the RAM, Processor, and power hooked up to the board. the hard drive is disconnected.

edit2: oh and when I turn it on, it will run for about 23 seconds, then the fan will slow to stop for a moment and everything comes back on and stays on. almost like it is rebooting or something.

WHOA!!! I just swapped the RAM again for like the 15th time (Being that it's the only thing that I know I can do) and a message just popped onto the screen; CPU or Memory Changed !!! Please enter setup to configure your system.

I guess this is a step in the right direction. my case has the screw parts raised up. do I need the brass standoff things to attach the motherboard to the case. these four spots are the only places where the board seems to touch. the only other spots where I could put the two standoffs the case came with are not contacting the board.

ok so it looks like all i need to know is whether I need to use the stand offs. I'm afraid to put the mobo back into the case.

edit: I took a chance, didn't use the standoffs and it seems to be booting up fine.
