I just finished transferring files from my computer to a an external hard drive, and I want to disconnect the drive now. I got a message saying, "The device, 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." Can anyone tell me what to do now? The drive is not doing anything. It's been seven and a half hours! I copied about twenty-two gigabytes of data to the drive last night. It's spinning but just idling.

Solution
Hi
Try running chkdsk on external drive , this often stops what ever is accessing the drive
Or shut down the PC
This should flush any buffers

Unplug restart and re connect and try chkdsk again if it would not run before
