Did I waste money on getting a 4gb version of R9 270X?

I was thinking 4gb of memory is better than 2gb, so i shelled out extra money for the 4gb version. To be specific, it is a Gigabyte R9 270X. I think I payed around $250 for it. The 2gb versions were like $190-$200 at the time. This was about a month or two ago.

So, did I waste money on the extra 2gb of vram? Would it have been better to go to the R9 280? I think the R9 280 was the same price. I know i shouldnt worry about if i purchased the wrong thing, but im curious.

If you are buying for multi monitor or >1080p resolution monitor then 4 GB
otherwise 2 GB is sufficient for 1080p monitor

There will be noticable diference in FPS between 270X & 280, for sure greater than 1-2.
My advice - do not think to much aboutthis petty issue.You can always overclock your 270X and will definitely match 280

play skyrim heavily modded at high res?

i wouldn't worry about it too much. I went out of my way to get 2gig cards when I "didn't" need to. next one will have more.

you could purchased a xfx 280 with 3gb for a little less.

Edit: Prices have gone up slightly but this is the card im talking about.

Yes, yes you did unfortunately. It's a 256-bit card which can't utilize all 4GB VRAM so in essence, anything beyond the bandwidth that it can handle is virtually unused.

How big of a jump in performance is a 384bit bus versus a 256 bit bus?

the thing about the bus speed above.......... is the rate at which the data travels from the graphics cards cpu the the graphics cards ram. 4gigs good for storing data so it doesn't dump to the system........ helps keep the machine from hitching or stuttering..........
