is the 4GB of 533MHz ram a single stick or is it a kit of 2 sticks?

if it's a single stick I would think it's either ecc registered or FB-DIMM which is only used in high end servers or workstations, not your normal run-of-the-mill desktops.

It's actually 4 sticks at 1 gb each. 2 sticks are Kingston kvr533d2n4k2/1g. 2 sticks are Super Talent t533ua1gv.

that's fair enough

it could be memory sticks or slots, check the memory sticks first
one stick of memory at a time, insert it into the slot that your 800MHz stick works in and try to boot

I tried each stick individually in the same slot with no success. Then insterted the 800 ram and it booted.

I'm now thinking it might be trying to run your 533MHz ram at 800MHz, which is too big an overclock.
Enter the bios (spam del during boot) and find the memory speed. Lower this to either auto or 533MHz.

I found the manual
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/15991/eng/DG45ID_Produc...
Page 9 gives the spec of the ram it can accept, it mentions 800/677 MHz. It is entirely possible it doesn't actually support 533Mhz ram. But we'll try what we can for now.

I don't think it does as it doesn't give the option to change it :-/ thanks for helping though :-)
