@1080p I don't recommend more than a 780 or 290. Not sure why you need that much for 1080p.

For sure invest in the 780, it is a lot more cool, reliable, and is simply more quite. Not only that, for most games it will run better.

My experience is that every 2/3 years a new game comes out that requires a GPU jump if you want to stay at that high ultra quality. Right now a 280x maxes out most games and a 780 will do more. So, a 780 is good for next 3 years and you'll want to upgrade even though you don't think you will.

the GTX 780 and the R9 290 trade blows!
If you can get a tripple fan 290 for cheaper than a 780 go with it, you´ll be great with both get the cheaper one

the vapor x is great but it may be the most expensive 290 on the market for you, the Tri-x is one of the best 290 coolers though

If you must go 290 or 780 then both are win win. I own a AMD gpu but have owned many Nvidia gpus. I love both and believe price/performance is key for me. If it is the same for you then get a 290 but make sure it has a good cooler.

Both the Tri-X and Vapor-X are excellent coolers. The Vapor-X is a better cooler but not nearly as much as the price increase would suggest.

Go with the Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJOXUKC if you want to get the most for your money.

I am really impressed with Sapphire and that model is really good. But once you get into the price range you are getting close to some 780s.
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 780 3GB DirectCU II Video Card ($478.80 @ Newegg)

However, I'm not sure OP is buying in US.

Though it is getting close to 780 prices, the R9 290 has the same horsepower as the 780 which still makes it a better buy when you consider the price to performance ratio. Now, if you are gaming or using features that favor going nVidia, you may find benefit spending the extra cash for the 780.

If you get a r9 290 I will trade you my Nvidia gtx 780 and you can save you some money. I like the Nvidia GTX 780 but not compatable with my AMD CPU fx
