In the confusion of moving, I used a 19 VDC power supply on my Seagate GoFlex FreeAgent 1.5 TB external hard drive (desktop-sized). It no longer spins. Here's the information printed on the drive inside the enclosure:
Seagate Barracuda Green 1500GB
ST 1500DL001
P/N: 9VT15L--570
F/W CC98
Date: 12076 Site: WU

I've taken it out of its enclosure, and tried connecting it to a Dell PC directly. When I do this, the PC power light flashes slowly and it won't even start to boot, which suggests a short in the SATA power circuit. When I disconnect the drive I can get the PC to boot fine.

The discussion at http:// has a lot of good advice on hardware hacking, but I was hoping to get instructions that apply to my hardware. It looks as though the posters on this other thread are referring to hardware hacking resources I don't know about, but that you could point me to, such as pictures of the PCB with components labeled.

I already have a digital multimeter and Torx-5 through Torx-9.

Thanks!!

The most important question I'm trying to get a sense of is, Is the damage limited to the PCB so that it would be affordable to fix at Donor Drives, or does it extend beyond that into things like the spindle motor and servo?
