decrease ping level

We bought a wifi router and modem through Best Buy and when it was installed, we got speeds of 20-25. Rarely even near 40. It was wonderful. Now however, the speed does not go below 50. We have not added any more equipment on to the system (it is still high in the middle of the night) and the wifi and router have remained undisturbed in its original spot.
What could possibly make the ping increase so much? I personally don't see a whole lot of difference in watching videos, but my son does see a lag occasionally when he is playing video games. Could the lag he is seeing be because of the increased ping? And how do I get the ping back down to the original level? Keep in mind, I am NOT a techy and anything too complicated will easily confuse me. lol
Any information will be of good use to me.
Thank you.

I find the ping amount does vary game to game but should be in the right ballpark; in my experience any ping under 70/80 is good enough.

Also, how long has your ping been higher than usual? A day? A week? Sometimes there is maintanence or a high load of internet usage (in particular my internet is slower in the evenings when people are back at work than it is in the afternoon in a weekday)

Have any new internet using components been used lately (nowtv box, new phones/iPods etc the list is endless)

Also video game lag can depend on your system too. I presume you are talking about framerates.

But yeah do a speed test and compare it with your advertised speeds . If it is much different give them a ring and they despite probably not...

What are these speeds of 20-25, near 40, etc that you are referring to? Are these the ping in ms or seconds? Or is that the bandwidth speed. Please go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and do a test and post the exact results. Also please include the speeds advertised by your ISP

If it is much different give them a ring and they despite probably not being very helpful for an hour and listening to Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" 70 times they can send a man to see if there is an issue with the internet pipe outside where you live. I have had to do this several times and now hate "Spring" in particular ;)
