My laptop is on but my screen and keyboard dont work!

So yesterday I restarted my laptop, Samsung, as the windows 8 software update told me my Fn button wasn't working so I did as it said but now the screen is black like it would be when its off and my keyboard doesnt work, I know this because when I press the caps lock button the little blue light in the corner won't turn on. But the thing is that the laptop says its on and its been plugged in and the little red light is on. And I'm getting desperate as all my work is on this laptop!

What model Samsung? Have you tried removing all power then accessing BIOS at Power on? (Tap F2 after you hit the Power button).
Whatever you do, don't perform a Reset, you'll lose data... Your personal stuff can easily be retrieved if Windows has failed completely. Meanwhile you may need a means of booting your Laptop to rectify Boot faults.
Create Recovery
If you don't have a Recovery/Installation disk get a friend running Windows 8/8.1 to create a Recovery Drive at the very least. Ensure their Installation is the same (Both 32 or 64 bit). You'll need a blank CD (Win 8) or a small (1Gb) USB Pendrive. Simply type 'Create' at your Start Screen. Choose Create Recovery Drive from Settings (Win 8) or from list (win 8.1).
CD can only be created in Windows 8 using Windows 7 File Recovery.
Leave the box unchecked for the Recovery Partition.
Get into BIOS (Setup F2) and make USB Drive or Optical Drive 1st choice in the Boot menu, and boot from the Recovery Drive/Disk. Proceed via Troubleshoot to Advanced Options and first try System Restore to a point prior to your problem arising.
