i have read a number of posts and answers. some are solved and some not.
seems to be this mobo has issues with trying to run SSD.
asus P5NE-SLI core 2 duo q6600 2.4 with 4 gig memory. windows 7 64bit.
currently running a 500 gig sata and a 360 gig sata. no problems. i have 4 sata ports on board.
i want to install a Crucial CT240M500SSD3 = 240 gig ssd
i am using an adapter card for the ssd.
it shows up in bios. not in windows.
i have found no where to change ide to ahci, just can't find it in this bios.
some say it will run under ide just much slower than ahci.
i have tried to do a fresh install of win7 but it hangs up.
so i have not been able to partition it yet. i have not tried the regedit trick yet either
i can't afford to change computers right now and would like to get this to work if possible.
things i know are from trial and error, some reading. i'm not a computer wizard.
so please keep that in mind when answering me.
waiting for help.
thanks.

Solution

This is what's probably causing your problems.

1.) Disconnect your 500GB HDD and your 360GB HDD.
2.) Disconnect your SSD from the adapter card and connect it to SATA port SATA1 (see page 1-31 of your motherboard manual for the location of the port).
3.) Double-check that the BIOS setting Extended IDE Drive is set to Auto (see page 2-19).
4.) Double-check that the BIOS setting Access Mode is set to Auto (see page 2-19).
Both settings are probably already set to Auto since you had 2 HDDs connected to the SATA ports but it won't hurt to double-check.
5.) Save your BIOS settings and boot to your Windows installation disk.

See if you are now able to install Windows; if...

See if you are now able to install Windows; if so then after Windows installation is complete you can then shut down and reconnect your 2 HDDs.
Don't format or partition the SSD, let Windows do it automatically during the installation process.

Your motherboard has an older chipset that does not support AHCI mode.
It only supports IDE mode and RAID mode, so there's no need to edit the Windows Registry file, it won't help.

Master and Dereck47, thank you for answering. I thought post was deleted because i could not find it, and did not recieve a notification of answer.
Anyway, yes Dereck seeems to be old chipset. Master, yes both were set in Auto.
I have been able to get booted to installation from a disc. But it hangs up in Step 1, Collection Information. It can't find the driver for the cd/dvd rom it used to load the disc. Now I'm going to try to find this mysterious driver and see if I can load it and maybe proceed. Also I did just now track down a user manual for my mobo. I have tried to load Windows 7 from 3 different roms. Still wants the cd/dvd rom driver. Any ideas please throw them at me. I'll try anything.
Thanks Again.

Finally got it to work. Could only get windows 7 to load in 32. Would not load up in 64. So I loaded 32, then immediately loaded 64 on top of it. I did remove all of 32 i could. Did have to sacrifice a few gigs of space, but to finally get it done it was worth the loss. All programs load and work as they should. I think it did make a difference when i plugged the ssd into #1 sata port, having all other drives unplugged. My chipset is old enough not to be able to set AHCI as Dereck47 stated. So just set everything to Auto. I haven't clocked it, but everything is moving sooo much faster now.
I transfered about 180 gigs in about 1 1/2 hours todays. Not too bad at all.
Thanks for the Help..
