Plugged ethernet cable but only registers 10 mbps?!

Okay my home installed a new optic fibre and the estimated speed is 100 mbps. When I plugged in to my dell laptop it registers correctly, about 97 mbps according to speed test. However when I plugged in it to my Lenovo desktop's cpu it registers only 10 mbps?!! And I have no idea why my cpu has only one ethernet port I cant find any other ports. I dont know if the port or cables problem. My LAN driver is Realtek gbe pcie family controller. My wireless is much faster at 45 mbps. Can somebody tell me what is wrong??

DONT use the 10m white Ethernet cable supplied by BT! its rubbish! I had the same problem with bt infinity home hub, only getting 10mbps using their supplied 10 m white Ethernet cable. but when I swap the cable and used the old yellow Ethernet cable which was supplied by sky, everything was sorted. im now getting full 70mbps download speed tested via speedtest.net. test was for 2 computers. both dell alienware desktop and xps laptop gave the same results. thanks!

most computers only have one LAN port as that is all that is required in the vast majority of cases.
I can't think its a cable problem if your laptop works with it.
You could try updating the LAN drivers but if that does not work then you will need to buy a new LAN card as it may only be capable of 10mbps ,don't worry they are very cheap.

@makkem Okay but is it just that simple to just buy a new LAN card? I heard something about switches and ports, half duplex and full duplex and it may not work even I just buy a LAN card of 100 mbps? Sorry Im no computer expert would appreciate if you would guide me through this

The card you have in your machine is a gig cabable if you are loading that realtec driver. It would be extremely rare to find a machine that did not have gig ports if it was built in the last 10 years. It would have at least 100m even if it did not have gig.

It is likely a cable issue. Make sure you try the same cable on both computers. If nothing else buy a new patch cable they are cheap enough and simple to try. Only other thing is to go into the hardware settings for the nic itself and make sure the speed and duplex are set to auto it could be set to 10m.

Okay, so I just checked the settings: speed and duplex is set to auto. WOL and shut down speed is10 mbps first. I tried changing some settings but nothing works. Ipv2 connection is working but not IPv4. Now when I tried to test using the same and only cable on my laptop, the speed test is not 100mbps anymore like I tested ytd! It became 37 mbps. And then when i restarted my laptop, it became 10 mbps same as my desktop. And it says unidentified network. Now I think its the cable problem but is it very fragile at the ends? I seldom touch the cables only did yesterday when i tried to connect to my desktop and laptop yesterday.. Pls help.

If it is set to auto then that is all you can do. You could attempt to force it to 100m but it may actually work worse.

I would try to buy a new cable. Pretty much anything cat5e,cat6 ethernet cable you can find work just buy the cheapest you can find. You should be able to get one for under $5

Seems like my laptop is toying with me -_- Its working great again, for my laptop though at 100 mbps after a few refreshing. But my desktop is still exactly at 10 mbps. I dont think it is the cable though. U can rule that out. What other problems can it be?

When you rule out the cable everything gets expensive very fast. You really would need to replace the motherboard on the computer if the port is bad. You have already verified it is not a software/driver issue that is forcing the port to run artificially slow. The speed detected by the hardware itself and there is not a lot you can do if it does not detect correctly.

I am curious as to what you mean by "IPv2", especially in how you compared it to "IPv4". Having a background in networking and having read the history of networks from many sources, I have never heard of IPv2, other than IPv4 is a higher number, so IPv2 must have existed at least in concept. Whatever it was, I do not think it was every implemented.
