Hey guys, it's the new guy here, just wanting to get some input on my first build ever. I'm in college so I'm on a budget, but I recently had surgery and could use a project to keep me sane (what with the tedious nature of my rehab).

Anyways, I'm looking for a system for my rather tiny living room. Adjusting from consoles, and I'm going to plug into a 40 inch 720p, LCD TV.

So here's the build what do you think? Heat is my main concern here.

I'll hopefully be adding a slim ex-dell laptop Blu Ray drive and a secondary hard drive I'm recovering from the very same laptop. I'll be buying the 2.5/3.5 to 5.25 converter to fit the optical drive. So yeah, that's about it, please let me know if this works, sorry for the rush but I've got about a day left to save 20 dollars on promotions so any help would be appreciated!

The 270X is better than the PS4 and Xbox One GPU. The i3 CPU is on the low end side.
Of course, you can use a PC for more than just gaming.
Your build would be fine, however:

I know this isn't Mini ITX, but it may be worth looking at.
It has an AMD FX 6 core CPU instead, which will allow you to play BF4 and other newer games better than the i3.
I have added a CPU cooler, so you can over clock the CPU if you wish.

If you ended up upgrading to a 1080p TV / Monitor, the 270X will continue to perform well.

That's an interesting build. The thing I'm going to point out is that using a monitor or screen limited to 720p really makes this a question of how little you can spend to play games on that resolution.

This build is a little cheaper and the GPU will run a lot cooler at higher loads because of its low TDP:

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 750K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($80.98 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI Mini ITX FM2+ Motherboard ($97.24 @ Amazon)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($76.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($52.92 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Video Card ($134.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced (Black) Mini ITX Tower Case ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($37.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $511.10

Probably not the best build, but it has faster RAM, a quad core CPU, and it's cheaper. Good luck!

Yeah my big deal is I need a comp that can fit a media center sized spot, so something around 10" (tall)X 12" (long)X12"(wide). It can exceed these parameters by a bit, but there's not a whole lot of room to spare. I realize that the consoles might have me beat in some respects but the main purpose of this build is old school emulation (my games of course, but let's face it why have four old consoles when I could have one pc), media playing, and then I'd like current gen gaming (I hope *fingers crossed* I'll be able to play the next Dragon Age Game) but I realize I'm limited by my budget. I will be playing most games with a controller, and use this build in the living room, but I could always upgrade the gpu from the R9 270 in the future. Especially seeing as I have incorporated a 600W power supply in the mini ITX, but all the same do you think I can handle the heat in the build as it is? Are there better cases to choose without expanding my budget too much? Or are there more efficient cpu coolers that would fit my case??

How can I better do this build or is it as good as I can get it for the size and price??
