Suggestions to kind of keep up with modern games. 750 Ti?

Hello,

I am using a GTX 460 with a C2D E7600 @ 3.06, Gigabyte P35-DS3R mainboard, 4 GB PC2-6400 CL4-4-4 RAM (make that 3.5 due to Win7 32bit), 450W PSU.

I am mostly happy with the games I play, but sometimes not so much. So I'm looking for a spot upgrade - either CPU or video card - which will drastically improve performance in games like AC4 (which limps along at 10-20 fps now at 1920x1200 minimum settings). I do not need or want a high end system. I do not need or want to do a large sweeping upgrade (mainboard etc.). Yes, I am aware that the 775 socket is 10 years out of date, so I am not expecting wonders. I also expect that a CPU upgrade would not really be doing much as long as I stick with the 775 socket.

Would a GTX750 TI bring noticeable improvements? I like the low energy usage. Any other contender *must* have lowish energy usage in 2D mode (browsing, desktop, videos...).

Or am I really on the wrong track and should rather switch to 1150 (mainboard + CPU) for a huge boost? Would I be able to keep the old RAM - would it fit physically, would it be a huge performance loss?

Thanks for any input!

I have no particular budget, in a sensible way. I certainly won't shell out for the "top of the top" newest stuff. I did have a look around - if I would get MB/CPU/RAM, it would probably be something like i3-4130, MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate, G.Skill DIMM 4 GB DDR3-1600, selected simply due to the features I need + price + a little randomness. ;)

I assume that combo would still be loads faster than my old one; and it's pretty easy to upgrade later. Unfortunately I was happy enough with my current setup so I didn't bother keeping up to date... Obviously I won't find reviews that compare a 775 to a 1150 setup. Do you think that my assumption about the performance is quite correct? Will the video card get a bit more "breathing space"? Or will it then immediately be the bottleneck so I have to get a new video card anyways to notice any change in FPS?
