I will be buying components for a new mid level gaming PC tomorrow. Since there is NO correlation b/w prices in the US and here in India, I have mentioned approx prices converted from Rupees to US$. My current build is:
Processor: AMD FX-6300 $113.32
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2PT $50
GPU: Zotac Geforce GTX 660 2 GB Dual Silencer $208.75
PSU: Corsair VS 450 $43.52
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB $99.2
Cabinet: Cooler Master Elite 311 $60
HDD: WD Caviar Green 1 TB $55

This comes after a MUCH needed upgrade from my current build (8 years old)

My question: Do you see any bottlenecks? Would you suggest any parts replaced from my current list?

I play at a resolution of 1440x900.

Also, how do you see this PC doing 5 years down the line?

Something will ALWAYS bottleneck. The questions are which component will be the bottleneck most of the time and how badly. This changes drastically from game to game and even from scene to scene within any given game.

That said, your build looks reasonably balanced.

A couple of my friends were telling me that the FX 6300 isn't very powerful and will not be able to support the GTX 660 well? They said i'd face problems if I were to SLI it in the future.
Thoughts?

You are not going to be doing SLI on a micro-ATX board equipped with only one PCIe x16 slot and you will not really need SLI for a 1440x900 display either.

If you are serious about SLI then you need to pick a different motherboard, a FHD monitor and depending on how well-threaded the games you want to play are, you might want an FX83xx. If they are not particularly well threaded then you would be better off with an i5 and z97 chipset.

Also, if you are serious about 660 SLI before you even order the parts, you might want to consider a 770 instead and probably avoid needing SLI altogether.

Well, yeah I'll have to buy a new motherboard if I'm going to SLI. Problem is, my budget is currently tight, and parts are expensive here. So, I will have to wait atleast a year before I get to SLI.

When you say I won't need to SLI for a 1440x900 display, are you saying a single GTX 660 will be powerful enough to run most games at med-high settings?

And how does the GTX 750 Ti OC compare to the 660?

It all depends on how GPU-intensive the games you want to play are and what details you are willing to sacrifice to get frame rates back up. Almost any current GPU can get decent frame rates at 1080p in current games if you do not mind reducing details.

Since I'll be playing at medium settings, the FX 6300 and the 660 should get me through WD just fine. What i'm worried about is the "true next gen" games. I was looking at Far Cry 4, GTA 5, AC: Unity, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, and future games. Will I get playable framerates with either the 660 or the 750 Ti?

Also I'm strongly considering the 750 Ti because of its crazy low power requirement and the cost. It's pretty cheap. How would this card go against the 660? Should I consider the R7 260x as well?

R265 isn't that cheap here though. Same price as the 660. the 760 and 270 are out of the question. My budget won't allow it. :(

How fast is the 660 compared to the 750 Ti? Main factor I'm considering the 750 Ti because of its low power requirement. Or should I wait for more Maxwell cards to be announced and go for probably the 860 ( the 660 and 760 equivalent in Maxwell?) or will the 750 Ti cut it?

I may have been risking it but I was running a gtx 670 and oc'd for about 2 years on a 400w psu and had no issues, would still work if I hooked it up and benchmarked very well. Get the fastest card your PSU can handle. 750ti is for those with a 300w PSU and have limited options. The waiting game is a tough one I can't answer that for you nor can anyone as we have NO IDEA what is coming out and when.
