Stress Testing PC

Hello Everyone,

What would be a good program to use to stress test my CPU while also running Unigine Heaven?

I am overclocking my laptop but the GPU and CPU both share the same cooler inside and so I can't know the GPU is stable unless the CPU also kicks up because the heat is about 10C lower. I was thinking Prime95 but not sure if running both together would work out well.

Alright I will try a little longer. So far its hanging around 66C, and it only seemed to get that high cause I tried covering the vent for a minute. In games it typically kicks up to about 77C because my laptop is heavily modified from its original hardware for a laptop.

It has been 20 minutes so far, but I will give it another 20 and see how it goes.

once the temps stay stable it´s either throtteling or reached the max temp eitherway your cpu temp should be fairly similar then

Also a little tearing should be fine during this right? Vsync is off and it looked more like partial frames than an artifact. Little bit on the edge how to take those.

My GPU is Nvidia GT 620m
Core: 860Mhz (Stock 625Mhz)
Mem: 1100Mhz (Stock 900Mhz)

Running it on Ultra

Well they aren't moving, and the CPU should read similar, but the GPU is doing all the work. the CPU is idling I am pretty sure, so I can't be sure if the GPU is running stable at normal load or not. Eh I will just load up Prime95 and see how that goes.

Whoa! Take it easy there, buddy! Laptops aren't overclocking friendly, even if they're capable of that function!

Haha its not capable of it really, but Nvidia Inspector can do batch file commands to force it. Would probably help if I didn't remove the core i5 and put in an i7 either. :p

Anyways Prime95+Unigine Heaven made the PC rather angry. Got up to 88C and ran for a few minutes then graphics crash like there is no tomorrow. One of those where you see so many colors and lines on screen, the image starts looking more like abstract art than the video should.

Though it was stable for 25 minutes with these settings when the CPU idled, and I have never seen my temps pass 77C with my most demanding games. Think I will try it again but with a little less stress on the CPU and see how it goes before I start lowering the clock rates back down.

Just keep pushing pal, just don't be surprised when it blows!:D

 So long as it doesn't take the house down with it we are okay. Though hopefully it will tough it out for another year or two. I bought this as more of a short term system. I'm only $550 into it after changing the hard drive, RAM, and CPU. Not that I want to be out the cash for another laptop, compared to the price of most gaming laptops I will be off pretty cheap compared to blowing up one of those. :p

Yea I know they aren't friendly to it as much as desktops, which aren't really friendly to it either just more so. It still can be done though and I have just finished my testing and benchmarking for now with some good results. Not long enough to guarantee 100% stability, and in a game if all 4 cores of the CPU kick up the heat gets to much and can cause crashing, but when only two cores run its the same heat as when I am gaming, and when three run its about 3-5C higher which is what I did my stress testing at to be extra sure. I got artifacts eventually which I knew was a sign to cut it down a little, but the earlier things I was seeing only came as a result of tearing. Vsync was off and it was running at like 9FPS mostly cause I had it up on Ultra so it wasn't going so well.

So far I have managed
Core: 865Mhz (Stock 625Mhz) 38.4% Increase
Mem: 1100Mhz (Stock 900Mhz) 22.2% Increase
Voltage: Default, no increase at all.

So that is pretty great gains for no additional power usage. Then I did Bioshock Infinite benchmarks on ultra DX11 and High with my default resolution of 1366x768.

Ultra:
Stock: 16.04
788/1100: 19.68
865/1100: 17.31

High:
Stock: 20.48
788/1100: 25.16
865/1100: 26.84

So there is some heat issues and throttling going on and they need adjusted, but over all good increase so far.

lol I know. I am surprised there was that much extra power I could make use of!

The temps are hanging at 80C when 3 thread stress test with Prime95 + Unigine Heaven and around 73 for gaming. Its a bit hot, but honestly its not much hotter than it used to be. At full stock the old temps were typically at 69C, and that was before I switched out my i5-3210M for an I7-3632QM. So hopefully if it must blow up it can be slow at it :p

I am trying to lower the core clock now and see if I can make the ultra FPS go up since it was throttling, but honestly I will probably just leave it be since Ultra settings weren't playable anyways. So happy with the results though! 6FPS increase!

Hey guys, I hope you are still watching this. I am having a bit of an issue, and I just don't understand it. My laptop is having occasional graphics glitches with lines and junk everywhere causing it to freeze and need forced off and back on.

Now, don't get me wrong, if this was happening with the Nvidia GT 620M, I would not be surprised. I pushed the thing hard, and even though the clock needs to be set after every reboot and is currently not set I would understand that.

What I don't understand at all, is that this is happening when the Intel HD 4000 graphics are in use. When it is in low power idle mode. Thanks to Optimus the Nvidia chip is practically turned off, and then it goes crazy. This did happen a few months back once too, and I couldn't really make sense of it then either. Not sure what is causing it.
