How fast should drive to drive copies be?

I just put together a new system using the Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 7 mobo and 4 hard drives. An SSD drive for the OS (not in the RAID array) , 2 WD 7200 RPM SATAIII 1Tb in RAID 1 and a Toshiba 7200 RPM SATAIII 1Tb not in the RAID array, all using the Intel Z97 SATA controller.

Copying large number of files from one drive to another starts at around 160 MBS but decreases to around 70 MBS at the finish. Doesn't seem to make any difference which drives I copy to. In the end I end up with transfer rates in the 60-70 MBS range. I am copying like 20Gb consisting of about 150,000 files.

Are my results normal? Am I taking a hit on the transfer rate because I am copying 100,000s of files?

I would think using SATAIII with the Intel Z97 chipset controlled I would get better transfers. Thoughts?

This is exactly it. You're copying lots of little files which takes up a lot of overhead on the hard drive. If you were copying only a few files that made up your 20GB then it would average 120GB/s+.
