Is a sound card worth it?

I was thinking of getting a sound card but I don't know if it is really worth it. I know the integrated sound cards on most boards are ok at best but I've been told by many that you don't need a sound card just get really high end headphones and that will be more than enough. So I was wondering what you guys think?

This is a very subjective question that is different for everyone...

I've used onboard sound and a sound card and there are certainly subtle differences. Most on-board sound with higher end motherboards is pretty much on par with using most soundcards such as soundblaster..I'm sure some of the higher end soundcards from ASUS make a more noticeable difference.

In the end all that matters if your personal preference. Keep in mind that sometimes picking the right speakers play a bigger part than the soundcard does.

Your ears are different than everyone elses. What sound acceptable to you may not be acceptable to me or anyone else.

What are you using to listen to the audio? Speakers, headphones?
Are they really, really good? (not expensive, good)
Does the audio sound sub-optimal?
What do you do with audio? Youtube? Games? Or are you a music producer?

Only get one if you really, really need one.
