multiple routers and opening ports

Equipment:

  • Time Warner Cable Modem/Router
    Apple AirPort Extreme
    Qnap NAS
    Desktop - Windows 7
This question all started because I wanted to set up a Minecraft server on my Qnap. I'm trying to
open up port 25565 but I can get services like CanYouSeeMe.org to see me. I setup a server on
my Desktop fist to see how it works and I get the error "connection timed out". I've also
wondered if my setup is right or could be simpler.

So my internet path is Time Warner Cable Modem to apple AirPort Extreme ( I have multiple
airport expresses for music around the house). My Desktop is connected to the AirPort Extreme.
There is a switcher on the AirPort Extreme to handle extra connections. The Cable Modems
only connection is the AirPort Extreme.

So, can I turn off the Firewall on one or more of my devices? Or make one of them a pass
though only? Should I keep the Windows Firewall on? When I have to open a port, I have to do
this IP dance from one router to the next and I don't do it often enough to remember the moves.
I have setup my Desktop and Qnap to be static IPs.

As a side note... any tips or helpful suggestions on setting up a Minecraft server on a Qnap
NAS, would be greatly appreciated.

If the cable modem only connects to the airport your best bet is to run this as a modem only and disable the router part since you are not using it anyway. The airport is your standard port forwarding. It should get a internet routable ip address for its wan address via the cable modem. If you can not turn off the router part in the modem....ie run it in bridge mode....you could set the airport to a fixed address and then use the DMZ option in the cable modem if it has it to map all ports to the airport wan address.

Sorry to take so long to respond to this. I called Time Warner and had them turn the Modem into modem only and not a router. They did it over the phone for me and everything is working better now.
