Gigabyte Z87X-OC Fan speed issues

Hello,

I got my GA Z87X-OC MOBO today.
My config is :
- i7 4770k - STOCK cooler
- 8gb ram 1333mhz
- R9 280x
- 840 Pro SSD 256gb

I currently have the stock cooler as I stated above, which im gonna change as soon as I have the money. I have installed the fan properly, enable automatic fan control in bios but when I stress the CPU it reaches 91 - 95 degrees and I cant hear the fan getting any louder. I tried setting it to "full speed' option, "manual" option and control it with speed fan but nothing changes.

Any ideas?

You can set it manually, but the on-die voltage controller will still try to control itself... 0.95v to 1.15v I believe. Look in your BIOS to be sure.
The core voltage is no longer controlled by the MB chipset. It's on the CPU now and it needs to compensate for the auto settings in BIOS that are still enabled. If you were OC'ing you would disable some/all of those auto settings and then manually set the vcore. But let's not get into OC'ing here. There are...

Check the RPM as it is now. Then plug the fan into a chassis fan header set to full speed in BIOS and compare the speeds. (After removing the fan from the CPU FAN header, you may get an error. Some boards won't start if it doesn't see a CPU fan connection. If that happens, temporarily plug another fan in the CPU FAN header.)

If the speed changes when plugged into a cha fan header, your MB may be defective.

Hello and thank you!

The thing is that I also have a fan controller zalman zm fc1, quite old but does its job. I tried the cpu fan on the fan controller and It acts really weird. if I try to lower the fan's rpm the fan shuts down , and it needs sometime until it starts spinning again. I have never experienced such a thing with fans . Im gonna try plugging the fan into a chasis fan port

Strangest thing of all is tgat the cpu max temperature is the same with the fan turned on or turned off....

The PWM cooler fan uses pulse width modulation for speed control. 3 wire fans simply lower the DC voltage. By using a simple rheostat to lower the voltage of a PWM fan, the results will be unpredictable. But how does the fan's RPM compare using a CHA FAN/SYS FAN header to the RPM you got using the CPU FAN header?

My guess is that the cooler is not functioning and the CPU is reaching its throttle temp where it is slowing the freq down maintaining just enough CPU speed to keep from shutting down. Have you checked the mtg of the cooler? Are all 4 push pins fully thru the post holes and fully opened behind the MB? Try lifting the feet one by one and see if any of them pull out of the holes.

Yeap thats exactly what happens... It seems that the cpu is lowering its frequency when it reaches 95-100c and thats why the temperature stays the same... Now im really worried. At first, i didnt installed the cpu correctly, as i though i had to push AND turn the pins instead of pushing them only. Then i did it correctly. Shall i clean the thermal paste and put some arctic silver 5 ?

You might as well start over, yes. Be sure to clean off the old stuff with cleaner first and let dry* or use purifier. If you installed the cooler once and removed it w/o re-doing the TIM, chances are you introduced microscopic air bubbles into the paste. That will reduce heat transfer (and could be the issue). To remove, twist CCW and pull up. Then reset them by turning them back CW before re-installing.

If there's still no joy after that, it is entirely possible that you have a bad CPU. I just last week RMA'd a Haswell back to Newegg. It idled at 50C. Loads would take it up past the Intel safe temp range. Yours is WAY past the safe range if the temps are accurate.

But isopropol alcohol will work too. Here's the AS5 instructions for the various Intel CPUs. They recommend the line method over the dab method. I've found either works fine:

Be careful with the AS5, it is electrically conductive. I've switched to MX-4 because of that.

I have reinstalled the stock cooler. I had better results. i got 75 degrees with Prime95 and aida64 but again with intel burn test at maximum stress settings the CPU starts throttling

IBT at maximum?!!! No wonder it is throttling with the stock cooler. Wow. I would never do that. But to each his own.
What kind of temps do you get with IBT at the default settings?

If you got 75C with prime95 after at least an hour, that is acceptable with the ambient temp that high in your place. Because of that high ambient temp, you should probably consider getting an aftermarket cooler pretty soon. And be sure your case has plenty of air flow and good cable management.

Im ginna test it for an hour and xhexk the results. By the way, vcore voltages are set to auto and are 1.14V. Isnt this a bit high? I have read that sometimes auto settings in bios use more voltage than needed. Whats the default voltage for 4770k so i can set it manually ?
