Download and run "SPECCY" (free) to know what components you have in your computer. http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

Another good free program is "Belarc Advisor" - http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
This program will also give you software codes for your programs.

After you find out the motherboard details, go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and check the specs of the motherboard. The specs will list the type of RAM that the motherboard will accept. Once you know this you can shop around for RAM that will work in your computer.
Usually the motherboard manufacturer will list the approved RAM (AVL). All this means is that the RAM on the AVL was tested and approved. RAM from other manufacturers also will work as long as it meets the RAM specs listed by the motherboard manufacturer. DDR, DDR2, Frequency, Timings, etc.
