Hi guys, just wondering would it be silly to upgrade from a 3570k, to the new devil's canyon.

Mostly used for gaming although i do stream sometimes.

Solution

your ivy bridge at 4.5ghz is faster than stock haswell. forget any cpu upgrade for at least a year or two.if you want better performance invest the money for a better gpu!

So what would my 3570k@4.5 be compared to in terms of gaming performance? 4770k?

Most games rely heavily on single-threaded performance so your i5-3570k would likely be better most of the time.

This is assuming your frame rate is not capped by vsync in the first place.

Once your frame rate is capped by vsync (as in your CPU+GPU are already powerful enough to make frame rates stick to your refresh rate or very close to it) then making it faster does not matter much since it mostly increases the time the CPU+GPU spend waiting after vsync.

Well, at least until more intensive games come along or resolutsion/refresh goes up and something (other than vsync) becomes the bottleneck again.
