Can i just plug an unformatted used hdd in a computer with different hardware?

My laptop fried last week, but I built a new computer. Can I just plug in my laptop's hard drive into it, even though it lacks some of the hardware my laptop had? (like the fingerprint scanner or the cd reader)

Yes if its not a pre-installed copy of Windows on it - and you still have the disk. But you'll have to download and install new drivers for the motherboard and graphics card.

Not if you've got the Windows disk with it.
