How to recover data from a RAW file type drive?

Hi. I ran a chkdsk /f on my secondary HDD (after installing a steam game didn't work because there was "no space left" on my half full 500 GB drive) and it returned saying it could not go through because it was in a RAW file type. I now also cannot see any actual files on the drive, just folders. After doing some quick research, I see that there is software that can fix these, but I can't figure out how to use any/make any work. I also have no idea what caused this. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks.

Quoted spam removed. Sorry - SS

Thanks for the info! Turns out, after restarting my computer and windows running it's auto repair on my C: drive (?) all the files are back and usable. I will definitely use your answer for next time
