I have a windows XP pro, a windows 7 pro and a new windows 8.1 laptop. The XP and Win7 computer can share files from each other with no issues. And they can log into the Windows 8.1 machine and grab files from Windows 8.1.

The problem is when going the other way where I'm on the Windows 8.1 machine and look at the NETWORK and try to log in it was no use. No username or password worked. It just keep asking me over and over again for my username and password.

A couple of hours spent searching the Internet and I turned on all the permissions I could find and STILL it was asking for my credentials.

And as I was typing this question up, I FIXED IT!

The Windows 8.1 machine was the problem. I went to the
CONTROL PANEL, then to
NETWORK AND INTERNET, then to
NETWORK AND SHARING, then to
ADVANCED SHARING SETTINGS, then

HOME GROUP CONNECTIONS - I changed it from the "recommended" setting of
ALLOW WINDOWS TO MANAGE CONNECTS

and instead choose
USE USER ACCOUNTS AND PASSWORDS TO CONNECT TO OTHER COMPUTERS

Instant SUCCESS as all the other computers share directories were instantly available.

you can also try leaving the homegroup on your Windows 8 machine, then restart & join the homegroup again. fixed it for me!
