Solved

what should i upgrade first cpu or gpu?

HI Guys,

My system configuration is:-

AMD ATHLON II X3 450

GIGABYTE M68MT-S2

XFX HD 7770 1 GB DDR 5

I mainly use my computer for watching movies and playing games, i almost play every game which will be released.......i want to upgrade my computer for better gaming performance which can play almost all games which are released in future under medium settings atleast ..... and one of my friend suggested me to upgrade cpu initially and i am here to hear suggestions from you guys.

I have below upgrade options in my mind:

1) AMD FX 6300/AMD FX 8350 + new motherboard

if there is not much change between 6300 and 8350 then i would love to go for 6300 so that i can save money and can go for higher end gpu.

2) i5 4670 + new mother board

i didn't mentioned K version because i don't do overclocking.

I am expecting suggestions regarding motherboards as i dont have any clue about them.

my overall budget for cpu+motherboard upgrade is 350$(20,000 indian rupees)

if i can save some money out of this amount then i can save extra amount and go for higher end graphics card.

i jut want to enjoy games which are released in future like in next 2 years under medium settings atleast.

I would go with the proccessor upgrade first then the gpu.
From your suggested upgrades i would go with the 8 core fx 8350 and i think that if your gigabyte motherboard is the 3.1 rev you can spare yourself buying another one for the cpu :)
But if not i can suggest the ASUS M5A78L motherboard :)

    HI,

Thanks for the reply and i heard that there is no much difference between fx 830 and fx 8350..........is it true and as i mentioned earlier i don't overclock.

    Please reply.
  3. I agree with @TechHelpNO. Upgrade the CPU first. As for the upgrade path, please see your other thread that I commented it on.

Yea i saw that you didnt want to overclock but i was just going by your suggestions.
As for your other question there isnt such big of a difference between the fx 8300 and the fx 8350:
The fx 8350 has a higher standart clock rate at 4Ghz as the fx 8300 at 3.3 Ghz
The fx 8350 uses somewhat higher power consumption at 125W as the 8300 at 95W

But overall after that they are basicly the same with a couple of dollars difference, but if you are willing to pay a little extra i would go with 4Ghz because you dont overclock :)

    HI,

Thanks a lot and o you think its wise decision to go for amd fx 8350 for just purely gaming purpose and what is the best higher end graphics card supported by this processor so that i can upgrade my gpu in future?
  7. CPU first. 6300 is well worth it for the extra money on the GPU.

    HI,

6300 is 6 core and where as 8350 is 8 core and you are suggesting me 6 core cpu........is this 6300 be futureproof for atleast another 2 years from now?

@TechHelpNO's suggestion is valid. But if you go the AM3+ route, the upgrade path isn't as good. If you choose the LGA1150 route, there are more upgrades to the CPU without having to also upgrade the motherboard for a good amount of time. And Broadwell will have a LGA1150 chip so it's looking good so far. I have no news on what will come of the AM3+ socket.

For gaming, the i5 is better than the FX series. Even an non-overclocking i5 will contest against an overclocked FX-8350. The reason is that most games do not use many cores, so the additional cores of the FX-series do not get used in games. And while the FX-series have more cores, each individual core is weaker compared to the i5's. So because the i5 has stronger individual cores and games only use a few cores max, the stronger cores make a big difference.

Yea i do agree with you, the i5 is better for gaming but i was looking for a proccessor by udayi's criterias about the money mostly, so thats why i suggested the fx 8350 :)
  11. @TechHelpNO: part of the issue is that OP is limited to 20,000 rupees (India currency). The FX-8350 prices at 12,475 on flipkart.com (cheapest). But then, it leaves only 7,525 for a motherboard, which isn't much. It'll have to be paired with an Asus M5A97 R2.0, which isn't a bad motherboard, but not great. That also limits upgradability.

Is it relly important that its paired with that motherboard? Because his original mobo is compatible for the fx 8350, if not i did show him a link to another asus motherboard and it goes a couple of dollars over the OP's limit :)
  13. OP's original motherboard has a CPU TDP of 95W so it would be not be compatible with handling the FX-8350. The problem with choosing a motherboard is that with the Indian sites available like flipkart.com, amazon.in, and snapdeals.com, finding a decent motherboard within a certain budget is not easy. The selection is also a lot smaller.

I got suggested for the i5 the Gigabyte GA-B85-D3H Motherboard, here is the link so that you can check it out :)

Well to be honest i am not 100% sure but i think that it does support overclocking :)
This motherboard is with the LGA 1150 Socket type which i think is mainly for Intel CPU's so... if you are going to upgrade in the future it would most probably be a Intel CPU on this motherboard :)

  20. With your budget, stick with a locked i5 and get the best board you can afford, with your budget.

The motherboard is capable of overclocking but not as good as for example the ASUS Z87...
The best motherboards for overclocking are probably the Z - series but those go way above the price ranges you gave :)
As for the CPU both k and non-k can be overclocked but the k can be overclocked much higher than the non-k version of the CPU, so its a matter of you, if you want to spend some extra money on the k version and overclock higher than normal :)

btw didnt find so many motherboards that are "better" than the one i gave you, for the price range of 7000 rs :)

    Hi,

Thanks for the help........and is overclocking difficult if i go for K series because am complete noob in overclocking

    HI,

I have decided to go for an i5 4670kprocessor....so can you please sugggest me motherboard for i5 processor arund 7000 rs and i heard that intel motherboards are cheap.........is it true?

If i read my sources correctly the motherboards designed by intel go for at least 7000 rs...
I got suggested for the i5 the Gigabyte GA-B85-D3H Motherboard, here is the link so that you can check it out :)

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply and of i go for this motherboard will it support overclocking as am buying i5 4670k processor and will this boar allow me for an upgrading cpu in future?.......:)

Well to be honest i am not 100% sure but i think that it does support overclocking :)
This motherboard is with the LGA 1150 Socket type which i think is mainly for Intel CPU's so... if you are going to upgrade in the future it would most probably be a Intel CPU on this motherboard :)

ok.....but 4670k is for overclocking right.......is there any motherboard in same price range which supports overclocking? or else shall i go with plain 4670 idf there is not big difference between normal and K version.....then i will go with plain version.

    I personally don't think so :)
The overclocking way is the same with the K and non-k
There are many guides for "noobs" ;) , out on the internet about CPU overclocking, but the easiest one i think is the bios way and intel have a guide on how to do that :)

No; it does not support overclocking. You will not find a decent overclocking motherboard for 7000 rupees. Stick with the locked i5 that I recommended.

  25. on a budget go with the i5 4440 and a h81 motherboard. It still has usb 3.0 and sata 6. The locked i5 is much stronger per core, the GPU matters much more anyway.

With the heatsink and good motherboard you need on top of the fx6300 or fx 8350 alot of the time the AMD is more expensive than an intel setup, you also need a good power supply for the power hungry AMD cpus. You don't want to cheap out on an AMD motherboard because the cheap ones are crap and will throttle the cpu down due to no VRM heatsinks and bad power phases
  26. Hi,

ok.....can you please let me know which will be good mother board around 9000 rs or 10,000rs? for i5 4670k

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply and i have decide to go for i5 4670 and confused between normal version and K version and i need suggestion on motherboards at affordable price.
  28. The intel is already so strong per core you don't "have" to overclock at all. You could pair the i5 4670 with a cheap h81 motherboard and be fine for many years to come. The h81 motherboards still have sata 6 and usb 3.0

if you could spent a little bit more money, the Xeon 1230v3 is basically an i7 without integrated graphics, and it costs the same as an i5 4670k does normally, maybe 10-20 more dollars at the most.

If I had of known about the Xeons when I was building my pc, I probably would have gotten one. You get the best of both worlds, very good single thread performance and good multitasking with the 8 threads.

ok........Thank you........so if i go for i5 will my existing gpu 7770 will be fine....because it may take couple of more months for me to upgrade gpu.
  30. yeah the i5 and 7770 is a decent combo, when you get a better GPU you could play any game on ultra fine
  31. thank you and so you suggest me to go for i5 4670 normal version with h81..........and can we notice any change between normal version and K version .........if there is no much difference then i can go for normal one and can start saving money for good GPU....:bounce::)
  32. yeah you'd be better just using the saved money for a better GPU :P

  37. Your links didn't work for me.
  38. it tells me this, "404: Not Found
    Uh-oh!
Houston, we’ve got a problem! This one didn’t quite take off
Looks like the page you requested does not exist or has moved. We suggest you check if the URL is correct."

but really all the h81 motherboards are pretty much going to be the same, just go for the cheapest one with good reviews
  39. Just pick the board that has the features you want.
  40. Best answer
that msi h87 motherboard is pretty decent, it really just depends man, each of those is a different chipset with different features, depends what you need for your motherboard. Just whatever you can afford that has what you want and good reviews.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply and i really dont know which motherboard will be good choice.......for each and every motherboard reviews are good thats why am confused........and to day i went to shop retailer and he suggested me to go for an i5 4440 instead of i5 4670 and he saying that there will be not much difference and he also sugget me last mother board which is 4000 rs.

will there be any difference between i5 4440 and i5 4670 ....and should i go with MSI motherboard as you mentioned about it and will motherboard effect performance of cpu?..........
  42. no as long as the motherboard isn't defective you could stick an i7 in a cheap 50 dollar motherboard and it work just as good as a 150 dollar motherboard. The i5 4440 is still pretty good, it's just not clocked as high as the 4670. The intels are so strong per core the couple hundred MHZ shouldn't matter too much. Although since you can't ever overclock them I'd just get the one with the biggest clockspeed you could afford, there's not much price difference between them here. I'd just get an h81 motherboard and call it a day, or whatever you can afford really

    HI,
Thanks a lot and one final question with which motherboard shall i go

    Gigabyte GA-B85-D3H Motherboard
    Gigabyte GA-H81M-S1 Motherboard

becuase the price difference between them is not that much
  44. get the b85 since it would have more features, as well as 4 slots for ram instead of just two on the cheap h81 model :P
