Hi,
I'm new here so please help me out if i'm in the wrong place I really do mean to play by the rules ^_^

So I upgraded from my AMD 6450 to a AMD Sapphire vapor x r9 290 I also Upgraded my Psu to a RM 650

The problem I'm having is that ever since I installed the new Hardware My pc has been rebooting randomly. I believe all of my drivers are installed correctly and up to date.
The reboots seem very random and not at high usage actually more often at low usage.
I did a few bench marks in Valleys and it all went well no reboots until I stopped the program and got up for a minuet I haven't been able to really play games on it yet since I've been scouring the web for answers durring all of my free time, but I did start up dayZ and ran it on highest graphics settings with great frames as a quick test, so my GPU seems to be working., Really everything seems to be working well untill reboot. Actually I'm using the pc now but its not stable enough to really use for much since the reboots happen really often., I'm scared it will reboot halfway through writing this lol.

I checked for error logs in my admin tools.
and I see an event 41 Kernel-power error under critical that seem par with my reboots but i don't know what that means and don't really know what to look for.,

Everything worked great before my "upgrade" lol So I'm guessing that the fault must be with my PSU or GPU., Or perhaps my computer just hates me~ I've been at it for 4 days now and tried just about everything I could come up with and really I'm just stumped please help., I will be most grateful

I'm still kinda new to all of this stuff but I really am trying to learn~

PSU: Corsair RM 650

check temps both cpu and gpu at idle or under load in case of an overheating. also try with only 2x4gb sticks at 1 and 3 slots.finally check psu. there are potential overheating issues with the rm series due to low quality componets. even at high loads fan might fail to start spinning when actually needed. if you suspect a psu overheating even at idle, rma the psu.

hey,
Thanks so much for the reply!
I'm a bit upset to hear about the rm series issue I picked this one out because I wanted a great quality PSU that was modular and I'd heard great things about corsair...
During this test both Idol and under load I kept an eye on the psu, Actually I even taped a bit of paper to the fan guard so that it would rub against the fan blades and make noise when it started., that fan never started~ still hasn't actually.
After it rebooted itself I quickly set my hand against it it felt warm but not really hot and after the load test it was definitely quite a bit warmer but again not really "hot" but that was just the casing.

Ok so I ran HWmonitor to get these stats its a bit more info than you asked for but I thought it was odd that the Voltages didn't really change between the two test. But maybe its not really weird. I don't know much about electricity. Volts, amps, watts it all goes way over my head lol~

Here are my findings:

I also switched my Ram around like you mentioned...
for the record:
My PC rebooted twice on idle (that was just sitting on my desktop with HWmonitor running) while I was trying to take notes on temps and all. However it never rebooted while I was taking notes while it was under load in Valley Benchmark on ultra...
My frames were:
min 16.7 max 71.1
To me it sounds a bit low but this was at ultra I guess and i never really saw it go under 25 so maybe that 16 was while it was loading in idk... Any way thought I should mention it
Also once I got out of Valley and sat on my desktop to check how quick the temps went back down my pc black screened (not reboot but just sat with a blacked out screen till I rebooted via power button) I think that happened one other time since Friday when I started this whole ordeal.

I suspect the PSU is faulty but I'd like to be sure. is there a way I can test it with software I've ordered a thing to help me test PSU's in the future but it will take 2 weeks to get to me and i'd like to get any faulty parts sent back to new egg asap so I can get my replacements.,

Do you think its possible I got a bad GPU? would it act like this Idk... I re-installed my old HD 6450 because the other set up is so unstable but I still have the RM650 hooked up., I was hoping it would crash just the same and make my life easier but alas :(
This GPU does use lot less power though.,
I would think that I'd be getting a blue screen or something though not just a reboot. I've even disabled reboot on system failure. but no blue screen i think i got on once at the beginning but I didn't have my drivers installed yet..

Sorry to bombard you with info I'm just going crazy over here lol
Any ways thanks for any ideas you can throw my way.,
~Nik

Hrm... Guess I should have researched the RM series a bit more., I might bookmark this link. looks like some good info.,
well I see you are a "power supply master" once I get my money back I'll have $120 to blow on a new PSU :) I really can't spend more than that right now., Is there a PSU you would suggest I pick up., reliability is obviously most important and I like the Idea of full modular, Being able to use what I need and store the extra cables has been nice and saves case room but its not like I can't live without it., I'm thinking in the 650-750w range for my system idk

Anyway thanks for your help! I will post here the results with the new PSU and if all is well I'll select your answer~

this is a unit made by seasonic. has japan capacitors exclusively ,offering great performance and longevity at a very nice price. you really dont need to spend more. trully a rock solid unit!

if you insist on full modular get this one. you really dont need 750w but at ~100$ there isnt anything better!

I like that EVGA 750, comes with sleeved cables too pretty sweet~
I see great reviews on it too., As a brand how does EVGA rate., I'm pretty new to the Psu market up till this RM I've never had a branded power supply. I've just used what ever ugly grey box I had lying around usually old dell/gateway stock PSU's I ripped from dead family Pc's, only recently have I learned how dangerous I've been riding lol.,
750w is probably a good bit overkill but if my problem persist at least Sapphire can't blame it on my 650w psu as they recommend a 750w with this GPU
I'm mailing off my RM 650 tomorrow hopefully it won't take to long to get my refund., I'm dying to use my new Graphics card lol.,

Honorable
EVGA makes decent power supplies but their G2 Supernova series power supplies are top of the line, especially for the prices that they are selling at. Their lower end stuff is not as good as some of the competition but for the $100-$140 range I would say the EVGA G2 Supernova is one of the best choices.

Ok so i got the new psu installed and the graphics card reinstalled booted up and... reboot after about 15 min of just sitting., :(
temps shouldn't be the issue since its not even on long enough to do anything and i should have awesome airflow., my sytstem works great untill i install the new hardware...
maybe I will try reinstalling the drivers for the gpu from the disk but not very hopeful.,
Any ideas? I'm really just completely stumped I will try anything at this point

First of all ensure that your power plug is grounded and please try this, ensure all steps are done correctly.troubleshooting checklist also due to installed Memory (12 GB 2x4/2x2) with uneven sticks may be a glitch. try booting and working with 2x4 only and then with 2x2 sticks at a time and run memtest

I'm not sure what you mean by "ensure your power plug is grounded" the power cord coming from my PSU does have three prongs the third I believe is the ground., so it is grounded right?

I read through the trouble shooting check list., all but the Cmos reset I have done but as I said My PC works great before I install this new hardware I was even using 14.4 AMD drivers on my old card., so I'm a but reluctant to reset Cmos or update my Bios because I don't have any experience with it and I've read it could brick my mother board., I use this computer for my work too so I'd be SOL.
So far today about an hour now Its stayed up new hardware and all. (now that I've said that it will probably reboot on me lol)
I wish I had another PC to test this GPU on and see if it is my system or not.,
Other thoughts what are the chances it is my motherboard I saw somewhere a guy was having issues with his MB accepting his GPU but it seemed more like it was really that he had a bad PCI-e slot.
Since my old car works fine I'm guessing that my MB is fine but maybe there are other factors IDK.,

anyway I haven't had time to play around with my ram yet when My PC reboots I will try that., I also uninstalled HWMonitor as Noobie suggested but I'd be surprised if that fixes anything as most of the time I haven't even opened it but It doesn't hurt I suppose.,

One thing that still baffles me is that I get no error screen or BSOD it just reboots I've even turned off the reboot on system error option., but still it just reboots and says windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown.,

Another thing is I bought a VGA to DVI-d adapter for my second screen just an old dell LCD screen I use off to the side for menus and such because this new gpu doesn't have the VGA port but even with the adapter the screen acts like its not plugged in at all its not a huge deal but might be a symptom idk
Could this be an issue with the gpu or maybe this screen is just incompatable.,

My pc has rebooted lol actually it keeps rebooting as soon as it gets into windows now., I had to get to safe mode to break the looping.

the wall power plug, does it provide grounding?also is your power grid consistant?is there a chance you need a ups? also make sure you check ram. i suppose you got the evga g2 psu, it cant be also failing! the ''troubleshout list'' refers to so many little details as ''is mobo properly sitted on the correct number of standoffs, if not it may be shorting off with the tower'' or ''For troubleshooting purposes, disconnect the reset switch. If it's shorted, the machine either will not POST at all, or it will endlessly reboot '' you must make sure, so we can start excluding possibilities.if everything fails then you must re assemble your pc from the begining!

Hi I edited my last post before I refreshed the page.,
Yes I got the evga g2 psu
I looked at the wall socket I believe it does have a ground conected I took of the front plate and peeked inside., I saw that about the reset switch but my case only has one power on switch I have to hold down to shut down is there a way to power on without it?
My grid sucks yes actually the power has gone out today I do need an ups I actually have an old one but have my psu plugged into the wall right now because it is not powerfull enough for a 750w psu
I will maticulously go through the trouble shooting list latter tonight when I have time and also recheck my ram like you mentioned hopefully I will find something I will treat this like a new build even though it has worked fine for the last couple of years now

Hey man, did you manage to find a solution? Same problem here... Decent PSU XFX 850w, and hit with random restarts. Any advice you could give a fellow r9 290'er with the same issues?

OK just got it all working today Looks like it was a compatibility issue with the MB at least in my case I've got the new system up and running with no unplanned reboots yet.,
will do more testing tomorrow and will post here again if that changes., I pray it does not lol

Weird it looks like my last reply to you was lost or something any way so what I did was build a new system all new parts (see sig.) looks like its going to work I'm running really stable right now..
any way I think the fault lies in my building off of an old dell MB last Bios update was in 2010 the year I bought it

Hope this helps you on your quest

Interesting, I had suspected that it could be the motherboard as everything else I have tested to a degree, so that would have been my next upgrade, this sounds promising!

With that said I will also be getting an entirely new build next month so it will be hard to pinpoint the exact issue, I'm already halfway there after troubleshooting so why not spend another chunk of my wages on the other half -_-

hello.
I have the same problem with r9 290 shaphire xtrix. I changed the power supply on "Corsair Builder Series CXM 750W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX/EPS PSU "and still rebout. I have a question or when you change the motherboard the problem disappeared.? what motherboard you've had before and what you have now?

I got a Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC, different card I know, but the guy from OC UK told me that a number of the R9 290's have problems with the GPU VRMs which cause overheating leading to black screens. He suggested RMA straight away so that's the route I've gone.

hello there. my myself has this problem also with my new sapphire R9 290x Vapor X 8gb OC Card, it keeps resseting itself exactly like you have mentioned above ^^

i have also fully wiped/reformated my PC of all Nvidia files and have reinstalled windows once already!, i am beginning to think i may have a faulty card now, i got this card as a monster upgrade, and so far my old gtx760 4gb OC card is doing better..it actually runs windows and idles without resseting :/

any answers of suggestions would be greatly appreciated! , i am phoning Overclockers UK branch tommorow to discuss what could be causing the issue

i also installed a new Evga 850w 80+bronze PSU to run this card with ease, i am clueless at what could be causing the random reboots/resets when sometimes doing NOTHING! lol

I ended up RMAing two of these cards to OC UK. The guy on the phone said that faulty VRMs on these cards frequently cause this type of issue. I would return your card if I were you. After 2 cards I gave up and went with a MSI GTX970 instead and haven't looked back. It's faster, cooler and quieter. Good luck!
