AMD vs Intel for a budget build

I hear AMD is better than Intel if you're on a budget, but I'm having trouble finding an AMD processor that suits my needs. I'm building a PC/SteamMachine for indie games, and the Celeron G1820 has all the power I need. I've looked around for an AMD processor with similar performance, but I can't find any that are significantly cheaper. Is there an AMD CPU that would perform as well as the Celeron for less money? I don't need integrated graphics, as I'm planning on getting a GeForce GT 740.

AMD is only better than Intel once you get to their quad core parts. AMD's dual core pieces are rubbish. If you're stuck at the $50 range for the CPU, nothing really beats the G1820. But for $75 you can get an Athlon 740 quad-core @ 3.2GHz, and for $80 you can get an Athlon 750K quad-core @ 3.4GHz (and overclockable)

Actually after a quick look on pcpartpicker, the Pentium G3220 (haswell) @ 3GHz is only $57. If you can you should get that over the G1820.
