Tall thin house with poor wifi upstairs.

I have a wireless & ethernet router downstairs, main PC upstairs is connected via cable, phones and laptop use wifi. I'd like Sonos in the upstairs rooms so ideally want to connect a second router upstairs on the ethernet cable and then connect the PC and Sonos to that. I'd like the second router to also at as a wireless repeater.

I can find out how to make the second router do one job or the other but not both - is this possible? If so how would I do it and what hardware would you recommend, thanks.

Pretty much any router will do what you want. It will not act as a repeater, but as an access point. TPLink gets generally good words around here in the budget category while Asus is widely considered to be among the most solid, albeit expensive consumer grade routers.

Set up the router as an access point. It may have a default mode, like an Asus, or it may need to be specifically set up that way by turning off DHCP and setting an IP address. Plug the cable from the other router into a LAN port along with the PC. Getting AC is generally not needed, but a 5Ghz N is a good idea. Set the SSID and password the same as on you current router but make sure to select different channels from among 1, 6 or 11.
