New graphics card causes random reboots

Hi guys,

I recently installed my new graphics card and now my pc randomly reboots very frequently.

My specs:
Processor: AMD fx-8320 8-core @ 3,5GHz (non-OC)
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Motherboard: MSI 760GA-P43
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x4GB 1600MHz CL9
Storage: Samsung 830 Series 128GB SSD
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 7200rpm HDD
Graphics card: XFX R9 290 Double Dissapation Black Edition @ 980Mhz (factory OC)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNova 1000 G2
Case: NZXT H440

The chances of my pc rebooting by itself are greatest when playing a game, but it doesn't matter too much. Even watching a youtube video or leaving my pc idle on desktop will cause it to reboot eventually.
What happens most often is that I'm doing something, say watching a Youtube video, then it freezes and the sound stops and buzzes if you know what I mean, then it reboots.
Sometimes my screen freezes for a sec, while the sound goes on, and then it fixes itself and gives the following error message from the task bar: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered." However, mere seconds after that it reboots anyway.
What also happens is that my screen gets all weird colors, that kind of look like the screen I had in front of me before that only it looks very pixelated and it has blue/purplish colors. The sound keeps going but it never fixes itself and requires a reboot.
I never get BSODs.

The best I've got was playing Battlefield 4 for about 1,5 hours and was astonished that it worked for so long.

I'm running the latest AMD driver (14.4) on Windows 8.1. With my old graphics card (HD6670) none of this happens.

This problem started occuring after I installed Windows 8.1. Before I had done that, none of my games would work because the driver (14.4) wasn't compatible with Windows 8.0 (which took me way too long to realise). After that, games did work but this problem started occuring.

Does any one of you know what causes this and/or how to fix this? I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks in advance!

Where do I turn off automatic restarts in control panel and why should I do it?

Also I don't get BSODs.

I've got Windows 8.1, but when I try to google for that it just gives me all the same "disable restart after windows update" crap.

Admirable
Control panel =>System and security => system => change settings => advanced => startup and recovery settings => untick automatically restart => Ok => apply => Ok.

=====> http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/f/automatic-restart.htm
its all here!

And please, if you ask me "where is that", I will go lord Vader on your fail!

where is that

Just kidding, got it! I just uninstalled the AMD driver and deleted everything my pc that is AMD/ATi related and stuck in the R9 290 again. It crashed once right after startup, but now it's been on for about 20 minutes already. This might be just a lucky one, but I hope it's not. It's now running standard applications (Chrome, iTunes) on the R9 290 without a driver installed. If it crashes again, I'll take a picture of the BSOD and post it here. Thanks for the help so far guys!

Okay so now I installed my R9 290 back in, still with no drivers installed, and it crashed again while watching a Youtube video. Even now I don't get a BSOD. It was weird though that I still got the "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered." message while there were no drivers installed.

After a reboot, I tried to install the new beta driver (14.6) and at the end of the install the install manager said it had installed the driver, but that there were some warnings in a log (.xml file). This is what was in the log:

I'm still experiencing crashes and I am pretty desperate at this point. My system crashed 4 times on me trying to type this message. If no one can make anything out of this, I will consider loading a backup from right after a fresh Window 8(.0) install.

I got my current PSU with the new graphics card. With this PSU, I can only make my computer boot when I rapidly press the on button (I made another thread regarding this issue http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2183328/hard-boot-psu-install.html#xtor=EPR-8809). So I think you may be right. I'll be trying to replace this GPU for another one and seeing it that makes any difference. Then I will come back to this thread.

Until then, thanks everyone for replying, especially BigBadBeef.

EVGA has an excellent reputation for customer service, at least with their graphics cards. I think you should contact their tech support and see what they have to say, possibly get an RMA if necessary. Edit: Yeah, its under an insane 10 year warranty. This is a very expensive PSU, take advantage of that!

When I started reading the early posts in this thread, I was thinking power supply immediately.
