I got the R510L laptop and was wondering if it would be safe for me to install win 7 on the machine. It came with windows 8, or 8.1 can't remember exactly.

I can only speak to Win7, as I gave up on Win8 long ago.
When Win is done making the disk image, it will offer you the option to make a restore disk that you can use to restore the machine using the disk image you made. (not to be confused with a restore POINT)

It should be perfectly safe to use any Windows operating system on the laptop. But always make a disk image of the way the system is now before doing a drastic move like that. Make a disk image to a USB drive or something similar in case you want to go back to Win8.

In fact, what I would do after that, is do a restore to factory condition. Then make another disk image of that in case you want to return it to as bought condition for resale. Or to send it in for warranty work.

What I was referring to was using Win backup to make a disk image (not a backup) to a USB HDD. Most flash drives are too small to hold that much data.

Factory reset:
If your laptop has a restore partition to return the system to as-bought new condition, that partition may get wiped out during the Win7 installation. By doing the restore to factory new before moving on to Win7, you can then make another disk image of the machine like that, if you ever want to have it like it was when purchased. Just a way to keep from 'burning your bridges behind you'.
