My dads PC needs servicing and he has 4GB DDR2 memory, an intel core 2 quad CPU, and a 500GB HDD (not 100% sure of specs, was a pre-built PC, but i think this is right, also i think a Radeon HD 4350 GPU). Will his system support Windows 8 and, if so, should i install the 32-bit or 64-bit?

Thanks guys, I'm ok with up to date hardware but with older/legacy stuff i'm not so sure :)

Solution
before you buy a new os look for the restore cd that came with the pc or see if there a restore image on the hard drive. easy to restore the pc back to factory then trying to install a newer os and then finding drivers for older hardware.

This rig isn't really for gaming lol, it's my dads PC and it runs really slowly, probably because he has Windows Vista installed :/ So I've volunteered to clean it out and install windows 8 onto the PC (I'm gonna take out the HDD, back it up to my 2TB drive, do a fresh install of windows 8 onto his HDD and then restore all of the data he actually needs (Pics etc).

I'm not 100% sure on what cooling solution the CPU has, I'm guessing it's a stock intel cooler, which has never had its thermal paste replaced :/ So that's probably something I'm gonna have to look at. Memory may need replacing/upgrading, the level of dust will probably be off the scale (this is a 5-6 year old PC that has never been opened up). I'm maybe gonna replace some case fans with some old ones I have here (old as in 4-5 month old stock fans from my PC which I have replaced).
