Will CM Hyper 212 EVO hit the RAM bank on Asrock Z97 Extreme6 ?

So there are a couple of big positives that appeal to me for the Asrock Z97 Extreme6, the biggest being that it set a new record in the benchmark test of DPC latency, having the absolute lowest time for the CPU talking with Audio, which helps alleviate pops and clicks in sound. My system is going to be built for a DAW.

Tech review sites have noted that the RAM banks on a couple of Asrock boards (this new Z97 Extreme6 included) are closer to the CPU than other boards and may make the Cooler very tight. See photo and comment from AnandTech here:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8045/asrock-z97-extreme6-...

with the paragraph starting with these words..."The socket area pushes the....".

I have since looked very closely on zoom-in photos online to try and examine if it is true that the RAM bank is closer, and sure enough it is, by looking at the white outline square around the CPU and comparing the one side of that square and gauging how close it is to the 1st RAM bank. I'm assuming that the white square is one of the specs mandated by Intel that I have read about in critics reviews, but I'm assuming.

I really do not want to put a water cooler into my new build and wanted to use the Hyper 212 EVO, but now I'm not sure that is doable. I don't know how to get exact measurements to determine whether or not the width of the cooler will hit the RAM when it is inserted.

Any suggestions on how to figure this out?

The fan is adjustable on a 212 Evo cooler. Plus getting memory like the tridentX series, you can remove the heat sinks if you need to.

This would be my choice:

Hey Spooky,

It's not the height of the RAM that has me concerned at this point, but whether or not the fan blade housing of the cooler itself will hit the RAM bank, width wise.

You stated that the Cooler is adjustable -- adjustable how?

The fan is movable up & down so that large memory will be able to fit under it. Taking the heat sink off will do the same thing. They are mainly for show and the memory runs perfect with out the heat sink. And you just might need to remove only one stick's heat sink. If using a two stick memory kit you can usually use the memory dual channels that are furthest from the cpu & cooler too.

I tried to put a pair of G.Skill Trident X sticks in my x97 Extreme6 but the screws holding the heat fins on were way, way too tight and there was no way to remove them (on either stick). Must have been a factory error. So if you order them make sure to do it from a place with a good return policy in case you get a batch like that. I had to return mine as they won't fit under my CPU cooler.

Did you adjust the fan up some? The 212 Evo is adjustable too.

I did consider it, but I ended up deciding to just send them back while I had the chance. In all likelihood they would've worked fine, but I shouldn't have to make adjustments to anything else because of faulty manufacturing. What if the overtightening of the screws had messed up something else, like the bond between the chip and the heat spreader? There's a low chance of something like that happening, maybe, but it's not really worth taking any risks since I was able to return them at no cost to me.

I still wanted G.Skill memory though so as soon as I sent them back I ordered some of this for almost exactly the same price ($2 cheaper):

I've read a few stories online of other people having problems with the screws on those Tridents. One reviewer said he finally got the screws out and the rubber washers underneath them had been almost completely disintegrated from the amount of force. Another guy said he stripped the head off of one of the screws and couldn't even try to take it out anymore.

For what it's worth I emailed G.Skill about it and they apologized and said that they would look into it. It might not be an issue affecting that many people, since only people with gigantic CPU coolers and RAM slots close to the CPU socket would probably notice it.
