Why on earth would you think you would fry your MB if you use the cable the PSU provides for the CPU power header? That is the standard way better PSUs are made; one cable that can be used for both 4 pin and 8 pin CPU headers.

The plug should be keyed to prevent using the wrong half... if that even matters. The wiring is the same for both halves; 2 x +12V and 2 x ground wires.
