I am new here and this is my first post. I have a prebuilt hp pavilion desktop and I am wondering if I can put in a dedicated graphics card. I know that hp's are not very good when it comes to upgrading, but I want to avoid buying a new pc. My computer is the hp pavilion p7-1240 (the direct link is too long to paste). The psu isn't a problem but I want to know whether or not I can put a graphics card in my motherboard's one pcie x16 slot. Thanks in advance.

Oh nevermind i just googled it and found out that it only ever connects through one pcie x16 but its wide enough to cover the next pci slot. Anyways, it's awesome how fast people reply on this site!

I can upgrade the psu no problem to anything, but right now I'm stuck with a 350w. Since I don't know much about this, do dual slot gpus actually need two pcie slots or does that refer to something else?

Really? A 750 ti works can be used with a 350w psu? One more thing, whats a good amd card that can be used with a psu as small as mine? At this point I'm just curious, but I want to know in case I can't upgrade it.

The GTX 750 and GTX 750 Ti are both extremely low power and can work with nearly any power supply. That said, HP's site doesn't list the manufacturer, efficiency ratings etc. of the power supply for the P7-1240... so I have no idea how good it is. I would recommend replacing the power supply with something like one of these: EVGA 500W 80+B, Corsair CX 500W 80+B (semi-modular).

That said, with the A10-5700 there isn't much point to get a GPU better than the GTX 750 Ti as the A10-5700 isn't capable of supporting much better.

On the AMD side of things, the HD 7750 is basically the only GPU with power draw comparable to the GTX 750/750 Ti, but it's nowhere near as good. If you upgrade your PSU first, then comparable AMD cards to the 750 & 750 Ti are the R7 260/260X/HD 7790 (which falls somewhere in between the 750 and 750 Ti) and the R7 265/HD 7850 which is a bit better than the 750 Ti... however, that creeps up pretty close to the price of the R9 270 which is far better than any of these.

But I wouldn't really recommend a GPU greater than the R7 265 or GTX 750 Ti without upgrading the CPU first.

Fair point. Perhaps a GT 740 is the best option. It's basically just a GTX 650 with a new label, and sub $100.

Thanks everyone! I think I will upgrade my psu, or at least change it out for a better one so I'm not taking chances, and then I will probably go for a gtx 750. One last thing, does anyone know any good inexpensive 400w psu's?

EVGA is basically the best you can do when it comes to Nvidia cards.
I really like PNY too.
