The 780 is better in most cases, especially since that's the DCUII version of the 290 which isn't very good. I'd grab the GTX 780 unless you can find a Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X for less; that's the only 290 I would recommend over a 780.

It should last a fair amount of time performance wise, but there is no real future proofing, nVidia has their 8xx line of GPUs coming up and no doubt AMD will follow with either a new line or more rebranded cards like they did with the R7 R9s (I grabbed a 280X at the release and in GPUZ it showed as the rebranded 7970 it was

VRAM isn't a huge deal, don't focus too heavily on that. Memory bandwidth and things like # of render output units are more critical than how much VRAM a card has. The R9 290 could have just 3GB or the GTX 780 could have 4GB and it would only minimally impact performance.

Performance can be better in the R9 290... but in most games the GTX 780 pulls ahead. The R9 290 becomes a better investment if you're gaming at 1440P or 3840x2160.

It's a decent card, but the GTX 780 is better 9 times out of 10. Unless you're playing at 1440P or 4K, or if you really need to save the money, then the GTX 780 is a better investment. If you're cutting it close to making the rent payment this month, get the Gigabyte R9 290. It's still a great card, just falls a little short of the GTX 780 in most cases.

I would only go 290 if you plan to crossfire as it has an amazing bang for the buck, but if you are relying on one card to do all your ultra silky smooth gaming get the faster 780, remember AMD launched 290X to counteract the 780, NVidia then launched the 780ti. 290 is only if you can't get the 780/290x/780ti.
