I just got a ssd and a few other new components. I read that I would have to deactivate windows on my hdd before I install it onto my ssd. What I did was deactivated it from my hdd and I got a message saying it was deactivated... then i Installed my new mobo, cpu, and just plugged in my ssd... I put in the start up disk and put in my product key which i deactivated from my hdd... I went through the start up and everything is working fine so I decided to reboot and plug my hdd in... I booted to windows with my ssd in prioriety in the bios and I did some internet browsing. but just a few minutes ago i was brought to a settings menu saying that I have to activate windows and when I go into system and under windows acivation it says windows is not activated. Apparently it says the key has already been used.... Can I just delete the windows files from my old hdd since windows is already on my ssd?

No. You did not say but it sounds like you have an OEM version of windows? These are good for use on one system only and are not transferable even if deactivated. I suggest you use the option to phone activate and talk to the MS representative. Often they will reactivate the OS for you if you clearly explain what is going on and convince them the product is in use on one system only. If that fails you will have to buy the OS to get a new key. If you have the retail version, you should be able to transfer it to the new system depending on which version of windows you have. You did not mention that either. Now all this is assuming that you had a legit. copy of windows to start with.

Yea i have the retail version with the product key card and the cd. I originally had it installed onto my hdd but i got a new system so I went and deactivated windows 8 on my hdd. Then I installed windows on my new system with an ssd and i am currently booted into windows and using the pc right now. I go into system settings and it tells me the windows key i have is already in use on another pc. I also have my old hdd in this system right now so I thought I could just delete all my windows files from the library on my hdd and id be good to go. 8.1 btw
