I have an HP Pavilion which currently has 8gb of ram and an AMD A8 5600 with integrated APU. I'm in the market for a GPU upgrade and am debating between upgrading to a gtx 750 ti, or biting the bullet and grabbing a new PSU and a gtx 760.

My question is, will my CPU bottleneck the new GPU to the degree that I don't see a big jump in fps between the gtx 750 vs 760? I was also looking at the AMD R9 270x, but it seems like the 760 would be a better bet if I'm going to end up upgrading my PSU anyway.

I would say the GTX 760 might be held back a little bit, but it would still be noticeably faster than a GTX 750 Ti.

With an A8-5600 he'd be limited to an HD 6670 which is not worth it by any means. He's better off getting a GTX 750.

So it sounds like there will be a benefit in moving up to a GTX 760 even with my weak CPU. My followup question is, what are everyone thoughts on the R9 270x? I know the 760 is typically faster in most games, but from I've read it seems like a nominal gain. I can pick up a 270x along with the power supply for about the same price as the GTX 760, so that savings is a compelling argument in favor of the 270x. My monitor's max resolution is 1080p, so I'm guessing I won't see a big difference.

The GTX 760 is about 15-20% faster. Up to you if the price warrants that. An R9 270/270X* is a really good card and in most cases you'll be playing at the same resolutions and almost the same settings (give or take one or two) as the GTX 760.. and if you can get a better power supply on top of the 270 for the same price, that's a good buy IMO.

*The R9 270 and 270X are the same GPU, the 270X is just clocked a bit higher. Generally looking at ~900MHz for an R9 270, and about ~1000-1100MHz for an R9 270X. You can easily overclock an R9 270 to match a 270X in speed, it'd take about 30 seconds in MSI Afterburner. So if you can save some money by getting an R9 270 with a decent cooler (such as DirectCUII) you can save a few bucks that way without sacrificing performance.
