Hi, is it possible to crossfire a R9 290x with a 7970? I know we can crossfire an R9 280x but I just want to be sure about this before I buy. Also will there be any hiccups or problems in doing so?

A single R9 290/290X will be able to max every game at 1920 x 1080. Very similar performance to my overclocked GTX 780.

The 7xxx series AMD cards have huge microstuttering and frame pacing issues when Crossfired and even though AMD fixed it as well as it can be fixed with driver updates ( after 2 years of problems! ) some of the problems were with the memory controller and are not fixable. The new architecture of the R9 290/290X fixed the problems. The 280X is just a rebranded 7970 and still has the issues.

So best bet moving forward is a single 290 or 290X. Or if you can wait until later this year then Maxwell shows huge promise.

Thank you for answering and I am running a 1080p display. Also I would like to ask whether 7970 cf and r9 280x cf be similar in performance? or should i get a r9 280x with my 7970? I can get a 7970 cheaper then r9 280x and if the performance difference is negligible then i would just get another 7970. (Btw I am running a Gigabyte 7970 on 1000mhz and can get another one just like it)

I'd recommend you NOT to get 7970 crossfire.. Since a single 7970 is capable of playing many games without problems at 1080p for a couple of more years... I'd wait at least 2 years, heck even 3 yrs, and then upgrade.
Though if you're determined to get crossfire, then go with 7970 - 280x crossfire.
Again, check out this picture.

Conclusion > I wouldn't recommend spending 300$ more for such a little increase + you're only playing 1080p, so you don't really need more power.. But it's your decision.

Not right now, but at the end of the year when a lot of new games are releasing. Right now I am able to play Watch Dogs at an average of 40fps and the new games that are coming are probably going to be a lot heavier. So I was planning to wait till then and upgrade if my pc cant provide a smooth experience. I was leaning towards 290x + 7970 but since that is not possible I am left with these options :
- single r9 290x
- 2 x r9 280x
- 2 x 7970
- r9 280x + 7970
out of these 7970cf is the cheapest option but if it is worth it i am willing to spend the extra money for 280x cf or pairing 280x with my current 7970.
