This XFX r9 290 is also available for $390 (after mail-in rebate) http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-r9290aedfd

Otherwise, to stay in budget, you could get this Gigabyte Windforce 280x http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvr928xoc3gdrev2 It won't be as good as the 290 but still a great card for 1080p gaming.

And finally from the Green team (Which should run Watch_Dogs a little better than the red team) there's this MSI GTX 770 http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-n770tf2gd5oc I prefer the 280x because of its 3GB vRAM needed for certain Watch_Dogs settings, but at the end of the day it's your money :)

It cost a good bit over my budget are you sure it can handle next generation games. Also is it a loud card and can it be over clocked?

the r9 290 can EASILY handle any next gen games, although WatchDogs does still need to be properly optimised (doesn't matter what card you have, this will be an issue until the appropriate people resolve it). I have a 280x and can play any game at 1080p at playable frame rates (Even the BF:Hardline Beta runs at 1080p 60fps with Mantle enabled), and the 280/280x cards are basically the mid range card in the r9 200 series, with the 290/290x being the top level cards (As well as the r9 295x2, although this is just two 290x chips in one card, in crossfire).

4GB GDDR5 vRAM is plenty for gaming even at 1440p or 1600p, so it will wipe the floor with 1080p, and the card suggested is Overclocked out of the box (Hence the OC in the name), but the cooling system on this card is capable of further overclocking. In terms of noise, I couldn't really make a comment as I've never used this card or cooling system, so read some reviews online and see what people say.

hmm I liked the 290 as it was as good as a 780 and cost less but a resent event with my budy cost me to hate this card :(

he got his 290 tri-x and it broke that very same day( after an hour or so of BF4 the card was making a weird noise and it caused the PC to shut down, we unplugged it and it was extremely hot and when we plugged it in and turned on the PC the PC didn't boot, gave us an error :0
anyway being an MSI fanboy, i convinced him to get the TFgaming and that also broke in about 4 days, for some reason it didn't work and it looked like we plugged a 240 in and not a 290, it didn't preform the same and couldn't maintain performance in game, we returned it and he got a 780 like me and its been working for the past 2weeks with no problem

the 280x is the best gpu AMD has ever made I have never even heard a horro story about itif you canafford a 290 then getting a 780 shouldn't be a problem, with my past experience I would never touch a 290 ever but I know most work OK but I would never gamble with $500+ ever, I would get an i5 and a 280x or a 780 if I was you

Definitely sounds like a power supply issue, AMD cards do use a bit more power than the "equivalent" nvidia cards, but normally have more vRAM and cost less

he has a GS800 psu, I just think the store we bought from had a bad supply of 290's because the other guy in my clan has a 290 tri-x and its perfect

To be honest, you can't really draw any across-the-board comparisons between "next-gen" games; the term is meaningless on PC anyway. Titanfall, for instance, requires very little to run just fine. Watch Dogs, on the other hand, runs like garbage on most systems. I expect new games to continue upwards just as they always have.

The only reasonable thing to do is to keep recommending the best cards for your resolution. If that's 1080p, I say the GTX 770 or R9 280X are fine choices. The R9 290 is okay, but I think its overkill unless you're gaming at 1440p.

Its not "definitely worth it" if you're paying $100 more for framerates beyond your monitor's refresh rate.
