So my friend needs a power supply for his build he has 2 hard drives, an fx-6300, basic peripherals(mouse, keyboard, monitor, usb headset), and soon an r9 270 (possibly r9 270x). Was wondering what power supply he should get since his old one will not be able to power his system with the new graphics card. would prefer it costing no more than $100, the cheaper the better (as long as it will still handle the load without getting crazy loud).

a PC with a R9 270x needs to provide at least 24A on a 12V rail and 500Win total.

Get a good qulity psu per - http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-su...

eg Seasonic 520, Antec HCG 520M, XFX 550

Corsair CX are Tier three psus. I would not recommended them for that reason alone. But on top of that on these forums we have found they have been having voltage control problems due to poor quality capacitors and the 24 pin connectors don't fit motherboards because they are misshapen.

The cx series is far from a great psu. It uses cheap secondary capacitors that have longevity issues (they tend to fail after a year or so). With corsair you should stick with the tx, hx, and ax series.

And lately we've been getting reports on the 500 and 600 24 pin connector not being able to be connected to motherboards.

Even without these problems, its only ranked as a Tier three power supply on http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-su...
