I built this PC just over 1 month ago and 2 nights ago upon starting my pc and getting to this: http://i.imgur.com/YeIYEzY.jpg screen I start hearing read and write sounds from the hard drive bay. My first thought was to localize which HDD it was (I had a old 1TB drive from my previous build that I use for recording). I disconnect the 1TB and boot up again and still hear the noise, So it's definitely the WD Black 2TB.

This is my current build:

  • i7 3770k (Stock Clocks)
    Corsair H100i
    GTX 780 SC (Stock Clocks)
    Asrock Z77 Extreme6
    Western Digital Black 2TB (WD2002FAEX-007BA0)
    Fractal Design R4 with Window

After the sound stops I never hear it in that magnitude again until next reboot.

After looking online extensively for answers, I saw this video and it closely resembles the sound I am getting: http://youtu.be/ZpNxovn7yjs?t=20s and the video is showing it during Windows' booting phase. I don't remember having this much noise during boot before or I my brain decided to notice.

So is this normal from WD Black's or is this a hardware fault and it needs sending back?

Edit:

I've done S.M.A.R.T testing with DiskCheckup and it says there is no faults with the drive.

Solution

the values look good, run a windows error check on the os partition and see if it finds any problems.

Already ran a defrag (Even though the fragmented % was %0) and rebooted, still got the sound on boot.

Well after 3-4 hours of it error checking the end results came up with no errors BUT, when it rebooted the read/write at boot was FAR less than before. I don't know how it fixed it but it fixed it.

Thank you so much.
