GDDR5 and GDDR3

Solution
Sure, the memory on the board does not affect anything else in your system and is just used for the card itself. As long as the slot on your motherboard is PCI-e, you can put a new card in there. Also be sure that your power supply has the correct PCI-E power cables available for the new card and has the power as well. You can always buy adapters to give you the right connectors, but you'll need power too.

cirdecus is correct. The type of video memory used on a video card has nothing to do with the type of memory used by the motherboard. They are separate and distinct from one another.

Assuming you have an available PCIe x16 slot and a sufficient PSU, you can add nearly any GPU to any system. Of course, the components you have and your budget are limiting factors.

What are the specs for the system in question? Also, what is your budget for a new GPU?

Yes, a GDDR5 based GPU is faster than the same GPU using GDDR3 memory. GDDR5 offers greater throughput than GDDR3. Keep in mind that your Acer only comes with a 300w PSU so your GPU upgrade options are limited. You would have to upgrade your PSU to use the R9 290 you mentioned earlier.

Ok cool, with putting these 2 into my computer will anything else need to be upgraded? Cooling fans or whatever.

And installing them, is it a difficult task or as I said before, can I do it myself without much swearing and or crying? Lol

What would upgrading the motherboard affect?

ASUS A88X pro motherboard or just keep the normal one in there?

Radeon R9 270X double dissipation 2gb
or
Radeon R9 290X double dissipation 4gb

Seasonic X-850 80plus gold 850W

Swapping the motherboard would mean buying a new non-OEM version of Windows. You won't be able to use the Asus OEM version you are using now. Great PSU choice (I have the same in my main rig at home). Both R9s are very good, of course the 290X is a monster.
