i have a dell e310 I want to tweak and use for light gaming like world of warcraft, minecraft, sims 3(for my wife) I have read up a bunch and found that it states it can only take 2gb ram but many people have proven that it will recognize and use 4gb. that being true has anyone seen or heard of a dual core cpu being used to replace the Pentium 4 HT 521 on a dell ojc474 motherboard? I will be using a discrete gpu also thank you for the tid bits of knowledge in advance

many people have ran 4gb and done well with that machine. I figured if dell lied about ram support its possible to be the same for cpu's was hoping someone had tried it. not wanting to spend 300+ to build new for a 10 year old son and my wife to play on occasionally. was hoping to get a $40 cpu somewhere I have already upgraded the ram and gpu (had stuff laying around just not a cpu). leaving this open in hopes to get more info

"My dell 3100 E310 is the exact same model as yours. I have upgraded the memory from 1GB to 4 GB as well as having installed a new 3.0 USB card. I just thought I would tell you that after much research and a couple of foolish purchases....(Ex: Pentium D and Pentium 4 3.8 Ghz), I have come to the conclusion that the largest CPU an E310 3100 will accept is an "Intel Pentium 4 650 3.4 GHz /2M/800 Socket 775" This is after countless hours of online research. If you want, I will repost here as soon as my new CPU arrives and let you know if it works...Good luck!"

He never reposted, but at least the 4GB of RAM should work.

Hope that helps!

Buy this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine-Intel-MicroATX-Desktop-Intel-G35-Express-LGA775-Motherboard-DG35EC-/151325427964?pt=Motherboards&hash=item233bb2c8fc

And this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-CORE-2-QUAD-PROCESSOR-Q8300-SLB5W-2-50GHz-4M-CACHE-1333-MHz-FSB-2575A-/171360083482?pt=CPUs&hash=item27e5db5e1a

The Q8300 will give you a HUGE jump in performance. It is a quad core on an architecture 3-4 years newer. It will do very well.

What speed is your RAM? This motherboard can only take DDR2-667 or 800.

It's MicroATX so it should fit. New motherboard, Core 2 Quad compatible, it's $40. Only one left.

The CPU is $40 also. It's from 2009 and still today plays modern games and can take graphics cards up to the level of a GTX 750 Ti or so. If you get it, you will be able pgrade your graphics without the huge CPU bottleneck you have now.

If you wanted to get a Core 2 Duo, you can get those for like $15 and that will still give a very huge performance benefit over the P4 you have now.

You may need new RAM though... do you have any idea the speed?
