i have a desktop that got struck by lightning i'm trying to re install the OS but it stays stuck on the windows logo. I thought that it was the hardrive so i purchased a new one but i still got the same result

Well it is good news that everything is probably ok with your computer. The bad thing is that you probably have a bad windows install disc or USB. What are you using to install Windows? Which version of Windows are you trying to install?

turn off the destop, unplug the power for 10 mins, then while it is still unplugged hold down the power button for 32 seconds (use timer) . then plug in the power and try again

Man, this could be anything to everything, but the first things to suspect that may be damaged are the power supply and the motherboard.

The sudden surge of electricity probably fried something, depends largely where it was struck i'd assume. Though it sounds like that system is of the devil and needs an exorcism. lol

It might be covered with your home owners / rental insurance. If you wanted to check that out.
The best thing to do possibly is to just pull it all apart and start like it was a new build and trouble shoot each piece as you go.

Are you sure rest of the components are fine ? e.g your MB or RAM or DVD drive. Is the MB beeping on start ?

Try the newly bought HDD on another system, to make sure it works.

Hi thank you for your answers. I am using a windows 7 installation disk. I try different versions just in case it was that, I try windows 7 home premium 64 and 32 bits also try it win 7 pro. I change both of the ram sticks and like i said this is a new hardrive so im guessing is not the hardrive. I was thinking maybe the processor or the mobo but im not sure.

Definitely its not the CPU, else you would not be able to get a display. It could be the MB or PSU.

The fuse on the PSU probably fried along with something else most definitely. If it was a good PSU then the motherboard may be fine but otherwise I think both have died.

I don't think that is the PSU, but i just notice that when I start the computer with the cmos battery on it gives me a 5 beeps so i removed it and try to power it on and no more beeps.

Without the battery it won't be able to keep time and BIOS settings. 5 short beeps indicate a "Process failure" . I think your CPU may be fried.

I was thinking that it was the processor bad also but what I just dont understand is why would it give me the beeps only when it has the cmos battery install.

Yes, truly intriguing but then again it's not that often that you see a computer struck by lightning so it sure it bizzare.
