With multiple CPU heatsink fans, should I use a Y adapter or plug them both into the motherboard?

Well, I have a Cooler Master V8 GTS CPU cooler and it has two fans. It includes a Y adapter to plug both fans into the CPU fan header on the motherboard. However, my motherboard (Asus Crosshair V Formula Z) has two CPU fan headers, I assume for situations like this. So, will it be better to plug each of the fans into their own separate header, or should I continue using the Y adapter? The fans are PWM fans if that makes any difference.

If you want to control the two fans individually you are better to use the two cpu fan headers. If you use the Y adapter, the two fans will run at the same speed.

Would there be any advantage to controlling the fans independently over simply having them locked at the same speed?

If both CPU FAN headers are 4 wire PWM and they are both controlled by the CPU temp in BIOS, use the headers. Usually the Y adapter is for boards with a single CPU FAN header.

No, also check the cpu fans to see the specification, because the cpu fan header will only support up to max 1A (12W), but most fan can't have that powerful. This is from the manual page 1-41. http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM3+/Crosshai...

Alright, thanks for the information. I will try plugging them in separate headers and see what happens.
