Computer keeps locking up. Help?

So my computer just recently started acting up, I'd say it started maybe a month and a half ago. Since this started I haven't been using it too often because it becomes such a hassle.

The computer will freeze up, sometimes the mouse will still move but nothing reacts to it, like clicking or icons highlighting. Everything else will be frozen, maybe lasting up to a minute or two before going back to normal and doing it again soon after. Sometimes it won't happen again for a good 30 min, and sometimes, it happens every few minutes. It's pretty inconsistent. If I'm on the internet, the window will freeze say (Not Responding), cursor shows that it's loading, but I'd be able to still open up start menu, desktop, any other program. If I have music going, or sound, I notice when it freezes up, the sound will become distorted and scratchy especially if I'm running a game or a program like Photoshop.

I've asked this question over at the Microsoft support forums, and all I got in answer is some default suggestion on how to clean up the system with CCleaner, Defragger, Disk Cleanup etc... all stuff I had already done before which does not seem to help.

So what I'm looking for is maybe a point in the right direction, because I have no idea what it could be.

Here's some of my system info:

Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
CPU
Intel Pentium E5700 @ 3.00GHz
Wolfdale 45nm Technology
RAM
4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 398MHz (6-6-6-15)
Motherboard
LENOVO To be filled by O.E.M. (CPU 1)
Graphics
E2281 (1920x1080@60Hz)
2048MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series (ASUStek

My graphics card is only months old, so I don't know if it could be that. I hope not. And like I said this issue only started up recently. I'm also planning on added 4gb of memory in a few days, so not sure if that would help either. If I need to add any more info let me know, but I'm a little noobish when it comes to searching for specs. I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks :)

Thanks for answering. I'm not exactly sure what I should be looking for in Performance Monitor, the graphs... I doubt I could decipher them.

When I look at the summary of it, the only thing that sticks out is the memory.

If it's the memory, would adding more help this issue? Like I said, I'm not sure what I should be looking for when using the performance monitor. It could perhaps be showing something else and I'm not seeing it.

I know to resolve this though I hope it works for you.

Right click Drive C: and go to properties and next in tools tab.

Try running Disk Defragmenter after defragging your Drive C:

at the tools tab again, click error checking and there will be a pop up that has choices "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." check them both and then start. There will be a pop again and schedule it for next reboot then restart your computer.

Don't skip the check disk and it takes long to finish if your hard drive is old.

You will see a better performance after that procedure.

I did as you suggested, and a bunch of other scans. Everything seemed to come back normal in terms of no errors showing. Eventually, I decided to turn off Window transparency, and it seems to have done the trick... for now. Not sure how long that will last, and I still don't know what the issue was since I've been running Windows Aero all this time without problems. Any idea what that would mean? But anyway, thanks for the suggestions. :)

I could, if you could let me know what exactly you'd need a screenshot of within performance monitor. I'm not sure I even gave a proper one last time.

That's what the graph was showing, I wasn't sure if I should have added any counters to it (didn't know which ones) I've never used that program before so... but if you need more I could do that.

Thanks. I kept an eye on it for a while, everything seemed normal. I mean judging by the graphs. Here's when I left it idle, had Firefox minimized for a few minutes which was the only program running besides resource monitor:

Went back to Firefox, loaded a few tabs, so there were spikes in the graphs, but nothing that stayed at a high percentage constantly:

So, I can't pinpoint anything abnormal. But, something could be showing that I just don't know how to spot. Turning off Aeros seemed to solve the problem, but I still feel pretty wary since I'm not sure what the problem was in the first place...
